Most Pleasanton parents/students DO NOT favor new calendar options

Original post made by Laverne, Castlewood, on May 29, 2014

The truth is...we dont really know how many favor the calendar options, and how many don't. Because the district has not surveyed us. But...we did get a survey about nutrition today, but no survey about the schedule, the one thing that will affect thousands of families, childcare, work schedules & even downtown business, and surrounding cities summer activities & classes!!
Whether you like the change or not, this is a democracy & we should really have a say, a survey should be taken to see if this is really what most parents/students want.

I just wrote to the board members to let them know I am excited about the modified lite schedule. All of my neighbors and parents I have talked to also want this new schedule. Thanks for the email addresses!

We live in a republic. We elect officials to make decisions for us. You can always run for office.

umm, hello, you did have a say. You could have attended anyone of the 3 open forums that the district held this year, in addition to attending any of the past school board meetings. The message below was sent out in an econnection in addition to schools newsletters. Not to mention since you have every board members email address, you could have emailed them your opinion at anytime. Truth be told, MANY parents are excited about the modified schedule and that is why there have been very few people speaking up about it

School Calendar Community Conversation
Pleasanton Unified is exploring the idea of moving to a modified form of the traditional calendar for the 2015/2016 school year. We scheduled a number of times and places for staff and the community to share their views. See the dates below for reference to past meetings held or click here to view the Instructional Calendar Options page.

We really have no idea if MANY parents are excited about the change, because there has never been any type of survey. You are assuming something, and you remember the ol' saying about assuming.
There is a chance that most parents dont know about the calendar change. Considering the fact that they only received 200 emails in response to the change (in favor & not in favor)...might just make one think...hey..maybe MOST parents dont know about it. I am not going to ass-ume anything.
I would really just like most families to know about it & then I am ok with however the weenie wobbles.
I'm sorry, if you were right, I'd agree with you.-Robin Williams

There has been info sent out in school and district emails. If parents are choosing not to read their emails, that is their problem. What is the board supposed to do, go ring their doorbell? If they are ignoring the info sent out by the school, it's probably not that important to them. A survey is not necessary. It's important to make a decision so the dates are settled and people can plan accordingly. Not every decision and change needs a formal survey or even less would get done by the school board.

I have to say that I believe there is a problem with the communication. While the district did have informational nights and set up an email account, the responses where set up as fact from parents. So at the board meeting on Tuesday, these 200 emails were represented as ideas from parents in PUSD. While they were, they were NOT representative of the majority of parents. 200 is note = to the number of families affected by this new schedule.

IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THIS SCHEDULE: show up to the board meeting Tuesday, June 3rd. I believe public comments about the modified schedule start at 7. Show up and let your voice be heard. They are voting on it that night - THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE!!!!!!!

The info might have been mailed, but the unions might have intercepted it. They want more free time, over and above the time the spend showing films in class, and stealing the mail would be about par for the course.

Perhaps if you were so concerned you would actually attend school board meetings or perhaps read the agendas that are sent out to everyone on the mailing lists (by law).

There are a few studies that show a slight increase in students scores, but a much larger benefit in decreased discipline incidents and increased attendance (which actually means that our distict funding likely will increase if we se similar increase in attendance).

There are ZERO studies that show the current model is better than an alternative and ZERO studies that show the proposed schedule has any negative impact.

Many school in Sierra foothills are on the same as the proposed schedule. A few districts (that are of similar profile to PUSD) have gone to a similar schedule.

I'm not sure why there is so much anger by a very small group of people, who somehow were too busy to voice there opinion when it was asked for and not want to demand that the district extend their timeframe of looking at alternatives. That goodness someone is paying attention and actually looking at ways to improve, instead of sitting around saying "well, it was good enough for me, its good enough for every other kid"

Right - Gee, another union bashing opportunity. You do know that the school board asked the district to look into this and came up with options not the union. You do also understand that the change in no way affects the amount of time a teacher or student is in the classroom.

I'm guessing we will see your name on the school board ballot next or perhaps getting into the classroom to make a positive change?

If they can take the time to send a survey about homework and nutrition, then it would seem they could do the same for a decision that will impact thousands of people.
