The federal government will NOT shut down tonight

But a government shutdown is only a shutdown in name, realistically speaking. Here is info on what will NOT shut down
Military will all work and continue to get paid
Federal workers who are told to stay home are essentially, based upon previous shutdowns, on what you or I would call a paid vacation. Every past government shutdown has been followed by legislation to order back pay to be given to the furloughed employees.
An additional list of government function which will not cease:
-Social Security and Medicare benefit payments
-air traffic control
-Transportation Security Administration
-Secret Service and other law enforcement agents
-U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
-NASA Mission Control
-School lunches and breakfasts
-food stamps, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP
-federal courts (for at least 2 weeks)
-Federal meat inspections and food recalls
-Department of Veterans Affairs including hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies
-IRS tax collection
