It's right next door to Ethan Allen Furniture. Fixtures were being set up last time I went by there a couple of weeks ago, so not sure when they are opening. There's one in Dublin, too, over by Casa Orozco.
I wonder why no one is complaining about the proliferation of this discount chain's stores that provide cheap, foreign made products.
Where are all the pro-union hypocrites that whined about WalMart incessantly?
It's a way to save a few cents! Not only that, stuff sells for $1!
You can purchase an entire chicken dinner for 99cents!!!
I have a hunch it's gonna be a success!!!
Not to mention a few jobs for the unemployed! HOORAY!
I CAN HARDLY WAIT TO BE THERE ON OPENING DAY! zippity do dah...
now...get back under your cute rock libby...tee hee hee
What we really want is a Target!
This is in response to the person above talking about why people (the implication is liberal Dems) have not complained about Dollar Tree coming in and all that. Note, in all this - I am not a Democrat.
The reason why Wal-Mart is bad for this country is because of the how many ways it operates that are either above the law or against the law or morally wrong. Whereas Dollar Tree either does not operate this way or they have not yet been caught. Probably the latter.
Here are a couple examples:
Wal-Mart negotiates deals with municipalities so they pay NO property tax for usually around 6 - 7 years. (Remember what property taxes pay for - police, fire, schools and other city and state services.) In return they PROMISE say 400 jobs (if it is a super center). What they don't say is 90% of the jobs are part-time (which means no benefits), so Wal-Mart gets street maint., lighting, tree service, fire and police for free for all those years. While we the working taxpayers pay for these services to take care of the Wal-Mart in our city.
Also for the part-time Wal-Mart employee, Wal-Mart very kindly assists their people in how they can qualify for other services like food stamps, WIC, discounted PG&E (which again we the working taxpayers pay for in the subsidies that we give the energy companies); discounted phone service; and (we the working taxpayers end up paying for all the babies these people have in our hospitals that they never pay for (but we the working taxpayers pay for in our escalating medical insurance costs).
So in answer to why Wal-Mart is so hated is that we the working taxpayers are supporting this company. We pay their taxes and we support all these part-time workers who have no benefits. We pay for the babies; the prisons, the schools that teach them in their own language and not in English, we pay for the fire, police, drug rehab programs, we donate our stuff to the charities that just keep supporting these part-time workers.
All jobs should be full-time with benefits so these people can pay for their own babies, and housing, and school functions, etc....
That's right. Dollar Tree is opening on January 11, according to the Around Dublin website.
Thank you for adding real examples re Walmart. It is much nicer to read tangible examples than just rants.
I will buy a whole chicken for a buck by the way. I am not sure if an Union run shop could support such competitive pricing:)
I've noticed that there are fewer pigeons recently. Maybe those $1 chickens are really squab.
Those $1 chickens are probably pigeons from China or Vietnam inside people's homes (the same ones that breed epidemic viruses).
The neighborhood is really going to the dogs in Pleasanton. First, low-cost housing. And, of course, quickly followed by a dollar store. And, the robberies and muggings are sky rocketing. Getting more like San Jose and Fremont every day.
"Also for the part-time Wal-Mart employee, Wal-Mart very kindly assists their people in how they can qualify for other services like food stamps"
Sadly when my brother was a squadron commander in the Navy, he had many of his young sailors who qualified for food stamps. Now THAT is a travesty.
As regards to the Dollar Tree, some of there products are a good buy but many are not. People think just because something is a dollar it is a good deal but many are not name brands are inferior.
Pigeon Droppings - Get out from your rants and learn something. See the world instead of your walls. I wouldn't mind pigeon - it's all dark meat and not gamey or fatty like duck.
Let's keep to the topic - Dollar Store.
Comments on the above:
Don't think Wal-mart is the only one who negotiates these deals with local gov't. Prop 13 (as it relates to caps on Property Taxes for businesses) adds to the problem you state about roads, fire, police, etc -and is why this third rail is finally going to get touched.
As for the other WM comments -couldn't agree more except for one thing...I thought what WM is trying to do is called "maximizing shareholder value"-the very underpinnings of our capitalistic system and it should be admired...sorta inconsistent...
$1 chicken dinners are called "loss-leaders" -union or non-union wages don't really figure into the equation, it's about getting people in the store.
Dollar Stores- first, if I were EA I'd be a little (Word removed by Pleasanton Weekly Online staff)-not exactly dragging their demographic into the shopping center -hmmm, "maybe I'll zip into the DS for a couple of $2 videos after I spend $7,000 on my new dining room set"...
Landlords are trying to fill space with qualified tenants (and why we have so many downtown banks-they pay their bills on time). Some corporate schmuck sitting in an office in Peoria doesn't really care about Pleasanton sensibilities. We don't get to pick and choose retail tenants, they do, and right now they are taking any warm retailer they can find....
I think having a Dollar Tree will not bring down Pleasanton. It will be nice to be able to get some inexpensive disposable items like forks, plates, corn - more tax dollars for Pleasanton! Too many empty store fronts.
We have lived in Pleasanton for many decades, and through out that time there has been a serious lack of stores. Much of the time we would travel to Dublin or Livermore to purchase items that were simply difficult to obtain in this town. The mall added a certain category of stores, but these are certainly not the kind of stores that one would frequent to get the most value for your dollar. I welcome both the Dollar Tree and the Walmart grocery store as they both broaden the range of goods available locally.
The Dollar Store does carry some USA made goods. I have found great glasses with stripes, made in America, and only $1.00 each. If you look, you CAN find American made goods in most stores.
Don't worry about Pleasanton. Since the anti-bag law went into place people started taking their shopping dollars to San Ramon.
The new DT will be the old out of business DT soon enough...tee hee hee
"All jobs should be full-time with benefits so these people can pay for their own babies, and housing, and school functions, etc...."
OK, comrade pleasanton neighbor----as soon as the govt takes over private companies like WalMart (as Venezuela has taken over inductries in that country)you and your ilk can dictate the terms of a companies employment practices. Until then, even our dear leader is not stupid enough to micro-manage free enterprise to that degree.
. But, I'm sure you have differrent ideas.......
Not like most of downtown.
Dollar Tree stores do well, are kept neat,
and should bring a lot of sales tax revenue to Pleasanton.
Lots better than vacant.
BTW there's already a competing dollar type store in the same strip mall that has the Tuesday Morning. But when I went to check out, they offered to charge me more for several items.
Q. What happened to the proposed WalMart food store in the vacant former Nob Hill?
The reason why Pleasanton does not/did not have alot of stores was intentional. Pleasanton was a "bedroom" community. Bedroom communities are typically safer. The riff-raff tends to go where the store are. That way they can steal from the cars, or steal the cars or steal from the stores or hang-out with other useless people/kids.
However, the low-income housing will change our lovely Pleasanton. And yes, like it or not, Wal-Mart & Dollar Tree will change Pleasanton. However, they are just symptoms of society now. The real problem is us. There is a different attitude in the country now. We living here in America want cheap, cheap, cheap. People now say "HOW CHEAP CAN I GET WHAT I WANT". They do not care who has a job, or if they have livable wages. Nor do they care about oceans, or lakes and streams". They do not want to know if people are working in humane conditions". The attitude is, I have a job and I do not care whether anyone else has a job, that is their problem. Nor do I care if their water is polluted by the factory that build by cheap phone.
It's opening this Friday.
This is for the liberal hater person above...
As far as full-time jobs - I had a relative that worked his whole career as a salesman at retail store (like a Sears) and the wages he was paid supported his family of 5. They owned a house, a car, the kids had clean clothes, they went on vacation every year, he helped 2 of the three kids go to college and his wife did not work. He did this without a degree. But he made a livable wage at retail.
There were so many jobs like this. You could support your family if you worked retail. Or as a bank teller. Or as delivery person. Or as a clerk in a deli.
But now because everything sells so cheap (from the Pleasanton Neighbor above) there's not enough profit in the item/product to pay a liveable wage.
This is (the liberal hater above will hate this)because in our capitalist society we must make sure first that the executives and shareholders are given their due. The heck with the worker.
I am sticking to the topic. The topic is dollar stores. Dollar stores appearing is the canary in the mine that the city is going to the birds. Now, pay more attention, and don't be bird brained.
OK, trying deperately to stay on topic, Dollar Tree and stores like it are not the problem.
They are a result of the fact that the cost of living (particularly in this socialist utopia of Cali.) is too high as a direct result of over-regulation, over zealous environmental laws ('Nor do they care about oceans, or lakes and streams'--so let's force them to, by extracting tax monies to clean up after the spoiled brats who weren't raised with common sense or morals) and overtaxation.
Our state economy will only get worse as the dem supermajority bleeds the remaining taxpayers dry, watches businesses leave the state and invites parasites from the 3rd world and underachievers to feed at the public trough. Since that is the reality in our state and the voters have inflicted this upon us, thank God for stores liek WalMart and Dollar Tree.
Anothere Neighbor, I would say it is not because of the wages today, I would say it is the excessive CA taxes sucked out of his paycheck...to provide excessive public union benefits @ city, county, & state workers...little left for his family living. Also, union Comcast PhD pay, and union PG&E PhD pay, etc makes all monthly outgo greater proportion than in the old days, before blatent union excesses raised living expenses for everybody else, (except Ca PhDs and Silicon valley techies. Otherwise, all middle-class hurts in CA because of those union excesses we are forced to pay.
Sorry neighbor, trying to hide your union membership identy, like you give a crap about the average person, isn't going to sell. Can't pretend to act like something you're not.
And to Pleasanton neighbor, you have no interest in the $, economy, or average person, you're all about extreme green environmental controls....you're one who can't pretend either...it's just too easy.
We are sick of low income housing in Pleasanton. We have enough places already. Crime is really going to go up. We just purchased a new home in Pleasanton and we were just informed that more lowincome houses and apartments will be built off Stanley and Valley. We don't welcome this at all! There are several retirement residents living over there and this will put them at risk for scammers etc. Will the new low income residents be moved here from Oakland, Pitsburg or another slum? We are giving our country away to people from other countries. Being white is a minority! Tired of being forced to deal with this.
One troubled poster has a device to scramble his computer id numbers, enabling him to ooze the stench of self hatred and racism under several different names.
If u hate pleasanton/what california is becoming then move out. plain and simple. Noone is forcing u to live here. Pleasanton could use less racist people as shown in the comments.
It is amazing that several of you (Liberalism is a disease, pleasanton neighbor) can not stay on topic! Insisting on bringing every comment to the lowest level of hatred for people and politics that do not agree with the writers perspective. If you hate California so much because we are too liberal then MOVE!
Walmart corp has bought the Fresh and Easy chain. Now what?
Come on Cholo I know you will have a word in this.
Chris, I was here long before those of your ilk moved here. Rather than moving, I'll do everything I can to make your life miserable and fight every attempt you leftists make to turn our state into a 3rd world country. I, for one, do not have a self inflicted guilt complex-you bleeding hearts feel everyone should be at the same level, dragging everyone down with you. It's not going to happen without a fight. Be a do-gooder on your own time, on your own dime.
Where did you hear Walmart corp has bought the Fresh and Easy chain?
With Walmart opening grocery outlets, it doesn't make sense that Walmart would spend the money to buy something that is failing when they already have a successful growing grocery segment.
liberalism is a disease,
Your response to Chris was very well stated. I too have lived in Pleasanton for several decades, chose to live here because it wasn't another left wing loon cesspool that is so common in the Bay Area. It is difficult to see Pleasanton and most of California now being engulfed by loons. California has morphed from a triving, politically conservative state with a robust economy to a basket case state dominated by left wing loons. The California economy is horrible because the loons have driven businesses out of the state and we are importing a third-world economy by out-of-control immigration from third-world countries. Unfortunately, the loons are now dominating politics nationally as well, and we now have a President with dictatorial ambitions that is dead-set on turning this country into a socialist backwater.
From the december announcement....
In its statement, Tesco said that it had received a number of approaches from parties interested in all or part of the business, or in partnership with Tesco, and that it would give an update on the situation in April next year when it reports its full-year results.
The original concept for Fresh and Easy has been radically overhauled and the venture has faced opposition from trade unions.
mooseturd, pigeon droppings, disease ... all indicators of a sick, little self-hating KKKer who isn't fooling anyone.
In a word, bull. There's NO statistical connection between affordable housing and increased crime.
Nick (rhymes with...?) I stopped my membership in the KKK when they demanded I start paying monthly union dues and wouldn't provide an allowance for cleaning my sheets. In any case, I doubt the KKK cares much about the hoard for leftist loons taking over the state.
I also stopped hating myself when I realized that I'm better than any of you liberal elitists who always think you know what's best for everyone. I prefer to live my life as an individual that knows what is best for me and my family, without having to rely on pompous arrogant little pricks like you or the govt. to run my life for me.
Yeah, but we can't fool you...you're way too smart for that.....lol
None of the above.....try again with reputable sources next time, instead of groups that survive off of govt handouts.
Wow, knows a word that rhymes with Nick. I bet you've done really well for your family over the years. It must be frustrating watching all the new immigrant groups pass you by like a piece of trash on the side of the road.
I went to $ Tree this morning and filled my basket with all sorts of things,,,
Don't miss out on the discussion!
