Suggestions for Safe BART Parking

Original post made by Paranoid, Bridle Creek, on Sep 5, 2012

Can anyone suggest how to prevent this from happening again? We've ruled out parking in the Bart structure in front of the mall. Are nearby BART stations any safer?

In a strip mall along Hopyard (Chili's parking lot). Tow truck driver said it was the third incident in 10 days in that lot!!! (This was mid-August) You got a good deal - we had to pay a $500 deductible, plus ins. only paid 70% of the new converters because of depreciation :o( We are out of pocket $1200 due to the theft. PPD makes you fill out a police report online.

We talked to a guy at a muffler place - he is going to make some modifications to the converters to make them less desirable/harder to take involving some welding. We figure it's well worth the $100 considering what we are out already...

I hope karma takes care of the thieves! And we're shopping for better insurance....

Good luck!

Is your muffler guy local? I might start calling those types of shops, too. I am really worried it is going to happen again (since I don't think the thieves get caught or get jailed. It's like harvesting season for them...) Our auto repair shop insisted on replacing our catalytic converters with brand new ones on a 110,000 mile-Sequoia (to the dismay of Geico). Can't let those thieves steal our brand new converters!

Not sure you'll be safe anywhere except your own garage - my friend had theirs stolen while their car was parked in their driveway. Police can only be in so many places at once to catch them in the act. Crazy times!

There is one American-made anti-theft device for catalytic converters on the market that was recommended by a local shop. Maybe you insurance company will cut your rates if you have one installed?

Thanks. I will ask the shops that I call about the anti-theft device. I need peace of mind.
