Kudos should also be given to all of the laborers who have been working long hours to get this project completed on time for this grand opening. I hope they are mentioned and thanked at the opening ceremony.
I still can't believe Pleasanton approved all of this. Major congestion, practically three Safeways in Pleasanton---turning into a Dublin... Bernal/Valley is already a mess and now it will get worse. Add the Fair activities, regular traffic, and now a hacienda crossings style shopping center that's super congested?--- no thanks. I also really feel bad for Raileys and Genes Fine Foods--- great stores, but can't battle against the big Safeways (three of them close in proximity). :(
I would like it if Safeway would do what Raleys does: have the cashier load your groceries from the cart onto the counter. Until they do that...I'll be at Raleys. I am so sick of grocery shopping - something I have to do 3X a week. And Raleys does the unloading for me.
I loooove that!
Safeway is opening a new concept store, selling higher end items and organic produce.
So, you can go get your groceries there and eat junk food at McDonald's afterwards. What a concept!
I'll be interested to see if the gas station goes in. I don't see that happening as long as The Three Stooges are on the City Council. The owners of the Chevron station across the street larded the wallets of The Three Stooges once before to keep a gas station from going in, so one would assume they will keep the larding going. Therefore, Pleasanton keeps paying a 4-10 cents per gallon premium for gasoline because of lack of competition. Are we ever going to wise up and get rid of The Three Stooges on the Council?
I'll be interested to see what this new store is like. I *hate* the Safeway store on Santa Rita. Ever since Fresh & Easy opened on Rosewood, I've shopped there instead. I can't stand the long lines, the super bright white lights, and the crazy parking lot. With this new Safeway, I hope they have solid plans as to where they're going to put stuff. I also avoid the Dublin Safeway (the one with the gas station) because it's so huge and they move things around, so I can never just run in and grab something---I have to hunt it down. I will give Safeway one more try at this new store, but they'll have to work pretty hard to earn my business and pull me away from Fresh & Easy.
WOW, two more banks?
Also is anyone suprised to see how close some the stores are to Bernal; where the city planners @ sleep?
"Pleasanton-Everything the Name Implies" ain't no more. I like the name "Teflon" Jerry Thorne, the Chamber's Poster Child, better and "Twiddle Dee" and "Twiddle Dum" for the other two. The Three Stooges were funny--they are not. Looking like Milpitas, Sunnyvale and everyother city along a freeway more and more. Those bright lights are going to spoil the view for the hill folk. Box stores. 2012 cannot come fast enough.
As a busy working mom whose family lives very close to the new Safeway, I'm (maybe overly) excited for the store to open so that I don't have to drive across town for a Wells Fargo ATM or a gallon of milk. There is really no grocery that is a quick walk or bike ride away, unless you want to buy your groceries from the Chevron Minimart. And I sure don't.
What happened to the Baja Mexican Grill? I thought I'd read a previous Patch article that said that chain was coming to the new space.
I like Safeway...and for one am glad they are opening an Whole Foods type store. Safeway HQ are based in Pleasanton, they are a wonderful part of the community and I love that they hire people with developmental disabilities to do the bagging. I do miss the Nob Hill on Santa Rita, but Raley's is just too far for me to get to from the E. side of town.
Gas station please. Free market, competition, common sense
Safeway is usually a frustrating shopping experience. If they haven't pulled your favorite product from their inventory, they've reduced its size and charge you the same price for it. I typically avoid shopping there now.
I'm looking forward to the new Safeway's opening! It will be nice to cut down on gas and not have to drive to the other ends of town to grocery shop! The store I feel sorry for (but not really!) is Lucky's - they will really need to step it up a notch (or 4!) if they want to keep their customers. I do appreciate Safeway's hiring of developmentally challenged people - I just hope they hire a lot more of them! Half the time at the Santa Rita Safeway I am the one bagging! Raley's really does take top honors in that department.
Organic Safeway and McDonald, how nice. I was so excited to have this store close to my house so i don't have to go to San Ramon Whole foods, but now I am not sure if this is going to be a good idea.
Now I have McDonald instead of gas station and Chipotle. Big disappointment.
To bad their is NO SERVICE STATION, the car is here to stay!
When this was first announced I read that they didn't approve a gas station - so much for enabling healthy competition on price. I drive through Dublin on the way to work when I need gas - safe a few dollars vs. buying gas in Pleasanton. As for the new Safeway in general, I am a big fan of the one on Santa Rita/Valley - very friendly, clean, and quick in and out. Not a fan of the ones in Dublin. Looking forward to possibly having a better seafood section with more fresh vs. frozen food is available. Gene's is very pricey - if I'm going to pay that much, I'll go to Whole Foods.
Who cares about the view change for those living on the hill!
is safeway a union store?
who objected to the gas station? People who like paying $0.14 more for gas? (Last time I bought gas at Safeway it was $3.77 vs $3.91 in Pleasanton and then with my Safeway card I saved $0.60 a gallon).
Could we get a Chick-Fil-A instead of a McDonalds?
What I love to see though is that even though people have complaints about certain stores there are lots of alternatives. Don't like the was Safeway operates, shop at Raleys. Those stores to big? Go to Trader Joe's or Fresh & Easy, etc. Choices for everyone. And just because you don't like a store doesn't mean it should exist as we all have different needs and wants.
Thrilled that it's opening soon! I love Safeway and am very happy to have one closer to our home. Especially excited for more organic options. I hope the McDonald's doesn't happen. There are so many other great options. Something offering salads, sandwiches, etc (like a Panera, Denicas or Specialty's type of place!) would be wonderful and a great lunch spot for the people who work in the offices around that area.
So, Walmart Grocery with their low food prices is bad for Pleasanton, but a second ridiculously overpriced Safeway is good. Isn't it a main principle of socialist's business - instead of trying to compete with others by doing better job, just killing competitors by bribing government clerks?
I don't shop at Safeway and I will not shop in this new store. With their prices it's worth to drive to San Ramon to Whole Foods, no mention of Sprouts which was recently opened in Dublin. Of course, Pleasanton is too good for Sprouts either...
More traffic at the corner of Bernal and Valley. It's already a mess with the freeway exits so close. Did anyone address that?????
Thrilled we will have this new store so close-it is so needed. Dont understand all the haters in Ptown. Nothing says you need to shop there. Just as i dont dont need to shop at your market of choice.
Yea how about a Chick-Fil-A!!! The closest one is in Fairfield.
Mcdonalds would be the worst choice for P-town. bring on Chipotle.
Oooh maybe Safeway can have a booksigning for their grandopeneing-Tales from Swankville.
just curious, but it sounds like the Mayor isn't planning to show up to the opening of the new Safeway. She hasn't seemed to show up to anything now that she's been elected to her final term. Why did she bother to run if she's not going to be engaged on behalf of the residents?
CHIPOTLE!!! Listen to your consumers Safeway!!! If they are requesting it? HELLO??? Not another reason for kids to eat garbage...Just say NO to McDonald's!!!

I guess you're right and a quick search of the PW found these figments of imagination...
... continued from above; the PW software allows only so many URLs in one post:
I think there are some additional links, if you're still Curious; just let me know!
i just looked at the new Safeway ads and coupons.
This store just another Safeway, and is NOTHING like Whole Foods. More like Half Foods.Lifestyle store - What does that mean?? If twice the size, of course they will carry more products. Where is the natural foods and dietary awareness?
Whole Foods and Sprouts - even though i am not a huge fan, speaks of natural organic foods. Safeway is a step above Walmart groceries.
signed, angry misled natural food lover
I think Mat and daMayor have been too busy working on electric charging stations, after all being green is the number one goal for the city. Isn't that your #1 goal too ? Not! Screw convience and competition.
Expect long lines. Heard they are laying off up to half of the original people they hired.
Yes you're right to the other poster about layoffs, my daughter was one of them as well as three other Pleasanton High School students.
Who's left? Commuters from Oakland and Hayward.
I'm happy to shop at Raley's and Gene's and pay the premium for better service and product.
Don't miss out on the discussion!
