Lawn mowers at 7:30am on a Saturday

Original post made by Sleep Deprived on Nov 10, 2011

What is the law/rule about the times that lawn service can start on any given day? One of my neighbors has his lawn service start consistently every Saturday at 7:30-7:45am. First the lawn mowers, then the dreaded gas leaf blowers (so they can blow the debris into the street).

I get up at 5:30am every weekday morning and like to sleep in a little bit on Saturdays. Isn't there a law about starting this stuff after 8 or 9am? It wakes me up every Saturday and I lay in bed thinking up the speech I'm going to give the neighbor next time I see him.

Just need to know if I have any rights on this topic???

I used to mow my lawn late on Saturday, trying to be considerate of the neighbors.

But when my next door neighbor started going out of town for days and left his dog behind and the dog would bark at midnight and did not let us sleep, I began mowing very early on saturdays.

Why? About 5 neighbors were helping this neighbor with the dog (they would come in and feed it), which allowed my neighbor to go out of town and carelessly leave a barking dog behind.

When my neighbors complained about the mowing so early, I reminded them that thanks to them, I got no sleep every time my neighbor went out of town and decided to be cheap about dog sitting.

7:30am does sound quite a bit early to start loud work on a weekend. I believe that there is a noise ordinance for Pleasanton specifying that noise cannot exceed so many decibels outside of one's property. But that's the wrong place to start. Just have a friendly chat with your neighbor and explain your circumstances and ask him to have his lawn service start at a later time. Don't believe that most people would object if you approached them in the right manner.

I've taken 'sleep deprived' comments to heart. Instead of starting the day early to avoid midday heat, sunburn, heat exhaustion, sunstroke, and the like, I'm going to tell my crew to bear up to the heat and sun just for the sake of 'sleep deprived'. Does anyone in this town remember what it is like to cut your own lawn? Or do each and everyone of you have "your own Mexican" to do it?

Yes,I do mow my own lawns. Always have and hopefully always will be able to, while being respectful.
