What is going on @ Muirwood & W. Las Positas?

Original post made by Stuck in Traffic, Val Vista, on Sep 29, 2011

Does anyone know the purpose of the construction at the corner of Muirwood and W. Las Positas? It is really messing up the morning commute time!

Thanks for the info Muirwood. In some ways good and some ways bad...It is such a pretty view going over the freeway toward the hills...hope that light doesn't distract too much from that. How do the residents around there feel about a light?

The traffic is pretty bad from 730-830 am and 230-330 pm because of all the school traffic.

We do need a light there for those two times of the day. Do I like it? no, but I think it is best for all the school traffic.

I have lived in Highland Oaks my whole life.

I live in the area and I would say that a light at that intersection is overdue. Although the traffic through the intersection isn't too bad most of the time, it gets really heavy there sometimes due to students and parents rushing off to and from Foothill High and Lydiksen elementary. I personally avoid that intersection when going on morning jogs on weekdays due to a near-miss with a Foothill High student who was rushing off to class in her pickup and who was confused about her turn order and her need to watch out for pedestrians at a 4-way stop. A stoplight will make the situation much safer for pedestrians and drivers, especially young inexperienced drivers going to and from Foothill High.

I have a hunch that the bridge will take you over the River Kwai. Be careful and go into the light, I hear there is no coming back...way spooky.

I just hope they don't follow this new light with a freeway on/off ramp for 680.

We should stop putting in stoplights in Pleasanton and use roundabouts. Roundabouts improve traffic flow, decrease idling cars spewing emissions, and are much cheaper to install than traffic lights. Sure, there is a learning curve, but with a proper education and outreach program, we could traffic flowing dramatically better through that intersection than the current or proposed solutions.

"I just hope they don't follow this new light with a freeway on/off ramp for 680."

Probably not. There's already a nearby 680 on-ramp on Stoneridge Drive just a mile or so north by the mall. Not enough justification to put another one at this intersection, which is in a residential neighborhood with relatively low traffic (except when parents and students are rushing to and from school).

We had round abouts in Pleasanton and what a mess. People in our area don't know how to use them. They were finally taken out because more people were running over them than going around. Also very hard for delivery trucks to maneuver.

When the announcement regarding the work on the Muirwood/W. Las Positas traffic light came in the mail, we called the city's traffic department to ask if this was the first step in the freeway ramp construction. They assured us that the W. Las Positas interchange was completely removed from the General Plan. Hopefully that's the case. As for the light, as much as I hate the push from small town feel to big city, it is a confusing and dangerous situation around school (Donlon, Foothill, Lydiksen) start and end times Monday through Friday. I hope they time the lights correctly to keep traffic moving smoothly and alleviate some of the huge backups.

This is long over due. I've lived in Highland Oaks 43 years and that corner has become quite a hazard. Hopefully, the traffic lights will eliminate some of it. Might even allow the motorcycles to continue up the hill without have to stop and then gunning their engines as they proceed.

Curious,
a roundabout for that intersection would have to be rather large due to the size and amount of lanes. How would a roundabout allow people trying to turn effectively as people couldn't see across a roundabout (as the city tends to plant garden features to add to the visual appeal). People don't know how to use roundabouts so adding one there would not only be idiotic but a waste of money, as it would need to be removed shortly after it's addition.

People need to get their heads out of the ass of the green peace movement and think in logical terms for logical solutions.

they are taking out the overpass since you people that live on the other side of the freeway think you are special.

As long as the stoplights are contolled by pressure plates, there should be no problem. Its a waste of money, but who cares, in Pleasanton money is not important.
