Bay Area public school supporters will participate in a statewide day of action today to voice their support of the education funding.

Students, teachers, and community members are coming out to defend education funding at all levels and to show support for Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposed budget.

Brown’s proposal would make cuts in education funding, but it would also extend current tax measures for an additional five years.

“We’re going to lose money either way,” Larry Hendel, a California Faculty Association staff member, said. “Right now the proposed budget is half cuts, half tax extensions. If the budget fails, it’s all cuts.”

“I think it’s the best deal we can get,” Oakland Unified School District spokesman Troy Flint said of the budget proposal. “It’s certainly not ideal by any means but we have to be pragmatic. We can’t cut off our nose to spite our face.”

Brown’s proposed budget, which projected a $25.4 billion state budget gap over the next 18 months, aims to cut state spending by $12.5 billion and temporarily extend several current taxes, according to his website.

Flint said the alternative to the governor’s proposed budget would be disastrous to Oakland’s schools.

“It would be catastrophic for children and for the economy down the road,” Flint said.

“Spending money on education will get us out of the recession, not put us deeper into it,” Hendel said.

  1. Bring on the cuts….”spending money will get us out of the recession”…. What a load of foolish dribble. The sole reason our state is struggling is because of the unions strangle hold on our state Capitol. Rally all you want…..taxpayers are not buying it. Keep throwing out the lame union rhetoric….it’s falling on deaf ears.

  2. Steve is right! It’s time we all started acting like Robin Hood–only not like the Robin Hood as portrayed by the liberal media, rather the true story of the patriotic American who took from the working class while giving massive tax cuts to the rich! How can we possibly offset the reduction of taxes on the wealthy unless we “take back” more from the other 80%?

    Huzzah, my merry men, huzzah!

  3. Robin Hood,

of course your disjointed sarcasm falls flat. Another tired union talking point….it is rich vs. poor. Really quite redundant and predictable. All us middle class taxpayers would like the fleecing to stop. Get your hand out of our pockets….Commence with the layoffs, cut the dead weight, and increase class size by 10. The kids will be fine, my taxes will not rise, and teachers will have to work like the rest of us. Your union clap trap is yesterday’s news. The gravy train has ended….just be happy it lasted as long as it did.

  4. Yes everyone, follow Steve’s intellectual lead!!! For those of us in support of our teachers, Steve is the gift that just keeps on giving. Tell us more of your original thoughts Stevie! Teachers don’t work hard enough! Raise class sizes by 10, 15 — heck 50! The kids’ll be fine! Teachers are so yesterday! And most important, Stevie’s taxes won’t rise!!! Cuz see, Stevie’s a real individual. Nothing ‘tired’ about Steve’s talking points!

Steve, our most sincere thank you. Please keep sharing your scintillating thoughts. Signed, all Measure E supporters

  5. Steve is Right is right! And so is Streve [sic]: my sarcasm WAS disjointed. Streve probably knows much more about joints than I do. But anyhow, back to the point: taking money from our schools to offset the much-needed tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires is not only our moral duty, but it’s as easy as taking candy from a baby! Except instead of candy, it’s their futures! And the best part is, you, the reader, can be complicit by simply not getting involved. Isn’t this a wonderful time we live in? 😀

  6. Glad to see that I’m under your skin Union spokeshole. You can’t combat logic. Riddle me this Bat Man; what other answers do you have other than dipping into the well again and again and again? Of..that’s right…it’s about the poor working class. Us titans of industry are sticking it to the man. Hope they are paying you well for your time on this site. Maybe Knaggs will promote you and give you a taxpayer issued raise! Tell Knaggs I said Hi…you are a good little puppet.

  7. Translation: “how dare you question our corporate masters!?!” Streve, you forgot to call me a “union thug” while you were at it. The Koch brothers will be most displeased with their lackey…

  8. Atta boy, Steve! You’ve got ’em on the run now! You’ve wormed your way under their skin with that keen analytical skill you possess which is sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel. You Rock, Buddy!!! They’re cowering beneath the great intellectual shadow you cast. They’re incapable of arguing with YOU!!!

  9. Looks like union thugery is alive and well. Don’t come between the Teachers Union and their pot of gold. They will stop at nothing to increase their coffers. Shameless and delusional. E will go down in flames and all these paid bloggers will go back to sweeping the union hall floors.

  10. What a sad life they lead….these Union sled dogs. Can’t you do some telemarketing or something? Isn’t your union steward helping you out? Don’t tell me your union dues are going right to the union fat cats you have pledged allegiance to…..but what about the poor working class? Those against E have logic on their side…resistance is futile. Ohh….about time for your 3 hour, union mandated lunch….did we buy your bologna?

  11. Some people are on these sites all day long calling other people names. But not Steve!!! He’s on these sites all day long and all night long sharing with us his intellectual acumen. That’s why he’s right. He’s unsurpassed in demonstrating how the other side doesn’t argue but just resorts to name-calling. Keep ’em on the run, Steve! Just keep spreading your love and good will and cheer to all the contributors here. We love you. The unions I’m certain must really love you. You’re the gift, baby. Keep on giving!

  12. Wow, and I you called ME “disjointed” earlier…

“Union fatcats” is a great one, by the way! I mean, who doesn’t think “union worker” and immediately think of Rolls Royce, caviar and yachts?

  13. Let’s type a little slower for the union muscle….Fat cats obviously refers to the union leadership that you bow to every night. Keep up with me skippy…Der, he done made a mistake…der…I sure have me some good points.

    Good night Gomer

  14. Can’t you recognize it??? The guy is brilliant!!! The power of his arguments wins me over every time. We need to hear more from him. We just don’t hear enough. I mean how many times can we hear: me and my family of four, or me and all my neighbors, or me and my dog are going to Vote No!!! Those who maintain there’s a fundamental identity problem here are just good spellers and grammarians who are envious and don’t know how to really reason. His fingers are too fast for you. By the way, in case you haven’t heard, he’s going to vote NO!!!!!!! Oh, by the way, Vote NO!!!!! Protect Steve’s pocketbook!!!!

  15. Steve – you are correct in your original post and assessment.

It’s obvious from the condescending personal attacks that a union shill has found his thesaurus and feels the need to try to impress. Or, perhaps, a former middle-school spelling bee champion who aspires to be part of Michael Moore’s next production of “Let’s divvy up all the money and start over.”

Either way – keep up the good fight — in 2012 the Senate will change leadership.

Unions breed mediocrity in work performance – always have, always will…!!!

  16. Actually, I am not the original Robin Hood in Reverse. I simply wanted to dedicate this post to him/her and say I have been humbled and bursting at the gut in laughter at his/her posts.

Also, I want to agree with Steve and Arroyo. Probably the best alternative to render these UNcivil kids who engage in civil disobedience more deferential to authority is the silence the left. (See Stacey’s ‘Concerted effort to silence’ post above. We need to censor anyone who disagrees with us or who thinks our ideas are silly.)
