Sad that a business has to close its doors. A strange time for Euphoria to do it, though. With all the awards and press and what should be the busiest time of the year for them, you think they'd wait until Jan 1. Must be more to the story than what PW has printed (as usual).
Wow. What a surprise. I loved that place. My husband got me a gift certificate in September and I was going to use it this week to get a mani/pedi, well I guess i'm out of luck. Do they have locations elsewhere in the tri-valley?
I think it really stinks when a business goes out without any notice, leaving people who bought gift certificates out of luck. It's business decisions like this that make me wonder about other business decisions they made. You need to be more thoughtful to your paying customers! We really didn't need two upscale nail salons on Main Street anyway. Just sorry that people lost their jobs...
There are approximately 80 salons in the downtown area, 2 that just opened in the last month... how many salons do we need? perhaps that is the reason this 2 year old business went under...it seems the market is saturated. It's a shame, it would be nice to see other types of retail in the downtown area to bring some diversity.
I'm not surprised they closed. I had been going there everyother week or so for quite awhile. I was there earlier this year right after the receptionist had been let go. The phone kept ringing and it seemed to be the duty of my manicurist to answer it, never mind that she was the only one with a client. Midway through, the owner came in and spent time taking to the other employees oblivious to the phone. Meanwhile, my manicure that should have taken 45 minutes lasted well over an hour and was not relaxing with the continued interruptions. I never went back. Its too bad for the employees, but not surprising given the owner's lack of interest in the clients that I experienced.
Really people..you think maybe the fact that they had girls on poles dancing during the first wednesday street parties, that they were somewhat boycotted...hmmmm.....upperscale pleasanton ladies don't like this tsk tsk...
I loved the owner, and at first she was motivated and bubbly. But after a while she became disinterested, I think, or expected it to run itself. You simply can't have success when the owner isn't present and involved. The economy was just part of the problem. I noticed last Easter that the Christmas decor was still in the window. Then, finally, they took out the reindeer and left the gold lame stuff up year round. If you wanted to buy one of their products, you had to ask what the price was--nothing was marked. Then the employees ran around like chickens with their heads cut off to try to find the price. Once, I just gave up, and never tried to purchase a product again due to the trouble I knew it would be. This is just not the way to run a company, and I'm sad to see Mike and the rest of the staff lose their jobs. They were great.
I too am holding an unused gift cert. of course there is no ans. to the phone --if anyone gets a refund -- please post.
I also have a gift certificate for Euphora, so assume I'm just out of luck, sadly. I never indulge myself with manicures or pedicures (our incomes are spent on necessities, kids, tending to our parents), so was really looking forward to this birthday treat, generously given to me by a friend. Oh well. I do wonder, however, whether the shop was selling holiday present gift certificates up until the moment they shut the doors... if so, that seems a bit devious. I'd like to think that's not the case.
Euphoria did A LOT for the community- spent thousands of dollars supporting good causes like Sandra J. Wing Healing Therapies Foundation (local cancer foundation) and school groups.
Have any of you ever tried to run a business full of Pleasantonians who make comments like the ones above?
Pleasanton is cash poor, rude comment rich. Why do you ask for diversity downtown when all you do is shop Walmart and Target, but then want to show of "our quaint downtown" to your friends and relatives?
Yes, the business certificates should be honored and contact the PDA to get Jovan's contact info. It can be demoralizing and exhausting running your own business- let's try to have some more understanding - Everyone has dreams, and works hard to serve clients.
Clearly, many people have NO idea what they're talking about. A) 80 salons downtown?! There is less than 50 in a downtown with close to 600 total businesses. B) Twirly Girls Pole Fitness is a legitimate fitness center offering another form of exercise other than running on a treadmill. Twirly Girls is NOT affiliated with Euphoria. They sublet out a small space in the back. C) The PDA will NOT give out Jovann's nor any other business owners personal information.
Get a grip for those trashing the owner about gift certificates. The owner had to have lost at least $100,000. And drained thier life savings plus more into her business. Taking drastic measures to stay open month after month. Not taking a paycheck herself. Deal with it and show some compassion to a family who lost everything living the dream and taking the risk of opening and running a business. You should be ashamed.

Well that pretty much covers it. The Pleasantonyites like nothing more than to brag about their money, their status and their wonderful little high end town. And then walk out without buying a thing so that they can order it from Amazon or buy it at Walmart. They waste the merchant's time, spend no money and wonder why a store closes. The owner really should have given notice of a closure and contacted those with gift certs so that they could be used. On the other hand, considering how the people in this town treat the Main St merchants, maybe this was just a little passive aggressive payback. Can't say that I blame them.
Maria & WOW, I didn't believe those numbers either so after a quick review of the Pleasanton Downtown Association's Business directory (downtown business being defined by the PDA as within that 3-4 block radius of the Main St, downtown shopping district & NOT "Associate" members) I was kinda shocked to count a total of 52 establishments that will cut, color, pluck, tuck, suck, inject, exfoliate, re-foliate, tan, bleach, massage, re-align, mani-pedi, cover you in mud, wrap you up in warm towels & play Yanni CD's to make you feel at peace while separating your money from your wallet.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm a capitalist at heart but I do remember a time about 15-20 years ago when there was this outcry from the helicopter mommies around town that there were too many downtown establishments that catered to serving of all things, alcohol to the adult citizenry. We have since purged all of those "evil" elements from our precious downtown only to replace them with the fifty two odd establishments where the wealthy, fat & pampered gather to have themselves cosmetically rearranged.
In conducting & devising any business plan an owner/investor will (usually) examine the surrounding area for possible competition, look at the demographic makeup of the surrounding community & evaluate their potential for success within their given market. Let us hope that new business's will be prudent of the current economic state & (IMHO) over-saturation of certain service related establishments in the general downtown area & strive to diversify the makeup of the PDA's portfolio.
In other words, NO MORE SALONS!
Yes it's sad to see another business go "Out of Business" but it doesn't surprise me. It doesn't surprise me either that other businesses are excited to give it a try considering we are on a gradual upswing in our economy. The only problem is that Pleasanton does not draw ENOUGH people to the downtown that will spend their money on a regular basis to sustain a New Business that needs to establish itself. We need a CHAIN store. Not sure if a Chain store would want to come to Pleasanton, if the city does not make it worth their while and beat out anything that other cities are offering. Time to step out of the box and make an offer, with a chain that "They Can't refuse." -
I had a wonderful experience at Euphoria several months back, but honestly, the only reason I went there was because I had a gift certificate. On my budget, a mani/pedi is a luxury -- and I can get one just as nice in one of the many strip malls for half the price. It is hard for a business to make it without repeat customers. Just reading above how many people were going to miss using their "one time" special gift certificates, vs. how many would miss their weekly/monthly visit to their favorite salon tells the whole story.
For anyone who bought an unused gift certificate using a credit card all you need to do is contact the credit card company for a full refund. I just did this myself for a gift certificate that I bought as a Christmas gift.
I am very sad to see Euphoria close its doors, but not surprised. I was just there on Friday for my regular monthly pedicure with Cindy, who gives the best pedicure in the business, and the place was empty. For the last several months, I have noticed more indications that the business was in trouble - no receptionist at the desk, no more options offered for mani/pedi treatments, no signs boasting their several Readers Choice awards, etc. The owner has not been there for at least 6 months, so I have to agree this failure was not just the economy. It appears the owner just lost interest and did nothing to promote the salon. It's too bad for the employees, all of whom were top notch and all had been there since the beginning - very unusual for a nail salon where people come and go with the wind. As noted by others, maybe if our planning commission was not so quick to hand out permits to the same type of businesses when the community is already saturated, the existing ones might have a chance to succeed.
Longtime Resident -- you clearly have no idea how downtown business works. The planning commission has NOTHING to do with approving a business that is renting space downtown unless that business requires an environmental report or other special license. (Nor does the PDA, the Chamber of Commerce or the City Council). There is a permitting process for restaurants, liquor stores, etc but only the landlord decides who the next tenant will be in their building.
So many people say that "they" should not allow more salons, restaurants, whatever. The only "they" in this equation is the landlord. Landlords downtown will rent to the first person with money in hand. At the high rents currently being charged it is no surprise that businesses fail.
I'm not really sure why the pole fitness studio is getting dragged into this. They shared a building with Euphoria but had nothing to do with them. I've taken classes there and it's a lot of fun and a great workout. I am sad to see a business owner go under. It's bad for her, bad for the town and bad for the customers. The whole situation and our economy is sad. There is no need to come on here anonymously and trash other people. Merry Christmas to you, Grinch!
Just found out it closed. Very sad, it was great for the first 2 years. But for those who want to know, a few of the nail techs are now at Pleasanton Nail Salon, near Vic's Salon.
If you take the time to visit the PDA's website and examine all of the personal care establishments, it adds up to 80. This includes massage, hair cuts, waxing, medi-spas and so on. If you add up the retail options we have about 26. I HATE to see a business close. Owning your own business is a complete sacrifice with little reward lately. I know a few retail business owners downtown who are barely hanging on and at least one additional store which will close their doors at the end of the month. If we really care about downtown then we need to fight for it. Businesses that have been open in downtown for more than 5 years seem to be surviving the poor economy relatively well because they have established themselves. The newer businesses are struggling to hang on. This doesn't mean that those struggling are bad businesses or poor business owners, it simply means that they haven't reached a wide enough client base to sustain their business. If you care about downtown, please do your best to support the businesses that are fighting to stay alive. Rent, staffing, utilities, and the price of product is overwhelmingly high. Lets keep these stores open. Keeping businesses alive and thriving will help attract anchor stores. No anchor will move to downtown if downtown appears to be dying!
So, another "Salon" in downtown closed! Sorry to see it happen, but how many "salons" and "nail places" does one town need? WE ALREADY HAVE TOO MANY!!! The great entrepreneural spirit prevails, but one has to queston how many of these places we need, and how many can survive. Next year at this time, who will know the difference????
Anyone who has shopped downtown or owns a downtown business will tell you everyone must be shopping at the mall or somewhere else. Other than out of towners strolling and gazing around, retail traffic is fairly dead. Some day everyone will acknowledge that our downtown ISN'T a shopping district, but a nice backdrop for all of the PDA''s events.
The "shop downtown" program that was so highly touted and cost a lot of money has been a complete bust.
I am a downtown business owner and the 12 bars of Christmas last night put on by the "Living in Pleasanton" facebook group was far more sucessful at getting people in the door than anything the PDA has attempted in years! Thanks to whomever was behind that effort!
Shop Downtown?: Obviously you are one of the downtown business owners that has no clue. That 12 Bars of Xmas thing had 30 people max all looking to do one thing, get drunk. I was downtown (spending over $300 at various stores on gifts and dinner) while it was happening. After speaking with the owner of the food establishment I patroned, they were quite annoyed. It was loud and disturbing to those not knowing what what going on. They spent less than $10 per person. I then talked to four different store owners who said not one of those 30 people spent money in their store. Back to you not having a clue. Downtown would for sure die without the marketing efforts of your downtown association. I've been to all the events and how can you possibly compare a nothing better than annoying event with anything else that goes on downtown. I would never know about the shops I spent money at tonight if it weren't for bringing the kids to 1st Wednesday or enjoying wine with friends at a wine stroll. Its too bad that businesses like you don't appreciate what you have. More likely than not, you should probably learn how to take advantage of the great things that go on downtown. But like many other businesses, you probably do not. And then you come to the PW blogs to complain.
What Pleasanton needs is a first floor only retail ordinance. Ask the merchants in Los Gatos how well it works -- they rake in money all year long. The Pleasanton merchants are afraid a "big box" store will come to town. But they would rather see the Domus site vacant for how many years now? Do you really think that WalMart wants to move to Main Street? What would be wrong with a Williams Sonoma or a Restoration Hardware? Are the merchants so afraid of a little competition that they will work to keep out the stores that might actually attract a crowd?
The landlords are the real trouble for a retail ordinance. They want complete control and they virtually own the town as it is. They would rather have another salon or bank than a tenant who might stay in business and offer something to the people who shop here.
No more salons, banks or restaurants on Main St on the first floor. That would certainly help to make it a shopping district.
Sorry Oh Please, but it is you who are clueless although my only perspective is from one of surviving as an actual business owner on our very own Main Street for over 10 years now. Based on that I just might have some small clue about how to make a business work, but you are entitled to your opinion.
The PDA, does (nor has ever done), much to help my business, in fact the very events that they operate with the supposed intention of bringing customers into my business actually typically achieve the exact opposite as my loyal customers have nowhere to park and stay away as a result.
Our Main Street is a beautiful and historic place that acts as a perfect backdrop for these community events. It is NOT a shopping district by any stretch of the imagination.
Question for you Oh Please. If Main Street is so desirable, why hasn't someone snapped up that space? I'm just sayin.
Sorry the space I'm referring to is the almost 3 year empty ex Domus location.
The Domus building is a waste of space! I loved shopping there when it was still open, but I'm not sentimental, and it would be nice if it could be converted into something useful, like maybe a parking garage... Pleasanton needs to take a page out of Livermore's book.
Perhaps if the owner had paid attention to the comments on Yelp she could possibly have saved the establishment. I used to get my mani-pedis at Euphoria and used to love going there. However I stopped going there because with my last visit I didn't get the manicurist I specifically requested for my appointment (with no explanation why and 3 technicians provided my services -very impersonal, I felt like I was handed off.... But the worst was that the seat cushion was dirty and had nail clippings on it! Just like it said on Yelp! I switched to Bollinger's. Clean, yay! (Now if they could play more than one song on their sound system!)
I didn't like the service, Very little parking, the price was a bit high and there are plenty of competitors around. Sorry. If you want to compete in a market with lots of competition, you have to provide a something special or at a reduced price.

Don't lump all the downtown business owners into one bucket. I would love a downtown ordinance restricting what goes into our first floor. The property owners and their attorneys are the ones fighting to make sure no restrictions are placed on them. Personally, I'd rather see empty spaces than more services or salons on Main Street. We aren't a shopping district anymore, we are a service district and until our community helps fight this battle with us it will remain that way.
This is perfect to have so many comments and to see that so many people genuinely care about this lovely little downtown area. It IS a perfect backdrop to events and would be a fantastic shopping area IF there were more diversity. I wonder why there isn't a larger chain that can use that Domus building, it would be far more practical and encouraging for the businesses surrounding it. I really like the idea of a Williams Sonoma or Restoration Hardware!!! something in that genre perhaps? or what about a good old fashioned Deli, where you can buy great cheeses and the like.
Look at Walnut Creek! what a great shopping area it has..or another perhaps even better example would be Carmel...with the galleries, stores, bakery, delis, clothing stores, oyster bar, etc etc. How do we as citizens make these changes? How do we woo in business? It would really be a shame to see any more businesses leaving! The store by Amelias (Storks Nest?) is the latest to go ...such a shame! Who makes the decisions to say yay or nay to business that wants to come in? It can't just be the Landlord as there are zoning and permits that need to be acquired. Anyone know?
