Collecting for Haiti

Original post made on Feb 5, 2010

It's been a busy past couple of weeks for a variety of outfits gathering items and goodwill for the country of Haiti. On Wednesday, students and faculty at Amador Valley High School held a run/walk on the track, while over the weekend the Pleasanton Rotary Club collected wheelchairs and walker. Late last week, Brownie Troop 1268 gathered up shoe donations.

No more aid for Haiti until they release the 10 Americans from an Idaho based church group who are being held on child kidnapping charges!

To No More - So punish inocent people who are suffering one of the worst disasters in history? Why? What did they do? Try to protect their country and children? All because a group hiding behind the guise of Christianity may have acted illegally and at the very least who's actions warrant investigation? How would it be any different if after a devastating disaster here, someone took your child without following proper channels?

To "Another Parent"
These children were all orphans living at the orphanage that the group these 10 Americans belong to were running. Some of these children, do indeed, have relatives but those relatives turned these children over to the orphanage because they could not take care of them for one reason or another. When the orphanage was destroyed, they had no choice but to move the children to a safer environment. You act as if these people just went around taking children off of the street and whisked them away in the dark of night. Maybe they should have just abandoned them?

My main issue is with stating no Aid go to a country that has suffered a lot. Especially over a situation where the law may have been broken. The authorities of Haiti were doing what they should to protect the children of their country, plain and simple. If Foriegners in Haiti start breaking these sorts of laws, Officials there may feel the need to tighten and restrict Aid, adoption etc. In trying to help a few out of self righteousness, ignorance or disregard for the laws, they may put even more children in jeapordy.
