Fair and Balanced Use of Waterboarding

Original post made by No Spin Zone, Another Pleasanton neighborhood, on Jan 28, 2010

Fair and Balanced - Bill O'Reilly of Fox News jokes about having the CIA kidnap Reid and Pelosi and then waterboard Pelosi. Remember, we're talking about elected officials and torture.

But I'm sure all the news Fox reports is fair and balanced. Right?

And O'Reilly, who is host of an opinion show on FNC and is not a reporter or news anchor, had a live stage show (which is sold out btw) and told jokes, and this affects news reporting on FNC how?
I would compare O'Reilly's show on FNC to outrageous lies told by Olbermann on MSNBC on a nightly basis, but no one watches Olbermann, so its kinda like complaining about a tree falling over in a forest.

Because the jokes are highly partisan at best, and obviously tasteless and offensive, and he is part of a news organization that claims to be "fair and balanced."
That's how.
That the show is sold out is unfortunate, but irrelevant.

NSZ; ever notice the "opinion" pages in a newspaper? But thanks anyway for trying to discredit opposing viewpoints.

YBM, ever notice the "town square forum" section on an online edition? You're not required to read that, either. Basic decency as a citizen of the U.S., and as a human being, should lead to the viewpoint that someone who makes jokes about using government agencies to kidnap and torture elected officials - specifically those with opposing viewpoints - deserves to be discredited.

NSZ; sure, but you didn't discredit O'Reilly, you discredited Fox News ("But I'm sure all the news Fox reports is fair and balanced. Right?")

That's like discrediting the Pleasanton Weekly because I don't like your comments.

No, it's not, because I'm not employed by the Weekly.

NSZ-you've proved once again that leftists have no sense of humor. Im' not usre if it's genetic or just the result of a constantly negative outlook on life.
Try going to a couple of shows at Tommy T's or another comedy club. Maybe you could even go see Will Durst...he'd be right up your alley. A leftist comedian....now that's a rare breed!

O'Reilly and Beck took their tour to Tampa, FL for tonight and sold out 20,000 seats. Obama fans may recall the the President also planned to travel to Tampa to promote his exciting new boondoggle, a high speed rail project. He attracted about 2,000, and those people got in free!

SteveP, Don't try to paint leftists as humorless. That's just dumb. AS for me, I have a perfectly good sense of humor - when it comes to things that are funny. O'Reilly's comments are not funny. I thought the comments Beck made re: Brown and the chastity belt were really funny! I really did! But torture is not joking matter.

jimf01, your observation speaks more to people's desire to be entertained than to be informed (ironically, in more ways than one, but I'm only referring to the most obvious - comedy v. interest/participation in govt.). So your comparison is not a valid one. President Obama is the President, not a paid entertainer.

Bill O'Reilly states the facts. That's why I love his show! Oh great Obama is going to spend more money on the train, just what we need to do, "spend more money," is he clueless or what? Just wait, by the time it is finished it will be wayyy over budget as usual. Oh, and no one will be able to afford to use it. Will be cheaper to fly. What a joke.

Right. Obama is clueless. O'Reilly is the genius.
Bill O'Reilly oversimplifies and then slants complex issues for people who are too lazy to look at the big picture.
Since that appears at times to be the majority, perhaps he more often does have his finger on the pulse.
I just hope you take the time to see how Obama schooled the GOP caucus today. Then try to tell me he isn't ready to put himself out there or isn't completely dedicated to improving the situation for the middle class in the U.S.

completely dedicated to improving the situation for the middle class

ah, now we get to the real agenda of nsz an unabashed Obama cheerleader. I haven't had time to watch all the video yet, but I plan to watch this interchange.

But for now, suffice to say I believe that Obama is dedicated to completely transforming this country, as he said repeatedly. His goals are those of progressives, which is why he has made vilifies corporations, insurance companies, fat cat bankers, political opposition, news organizations and now even the supreme court

That I am a fan of the current President is irrelevant to my observations regarding O'Reilly or Fox - especially if the latter is fair and balanced. Get it?

Our cuurent President is a joke and is incompetent. Today is comes out he wants the gov to pay 200 million for terrorist trial, he does the play by play at a college basketball game, and annunces an investigation of the BCS. Yes, this guy is really in touch with important issues in the US.

I use to love Chris Matthews & watched regularly when he first got his MSNBC show. Then this unknown Olberman guy started...In all my years of watching all kinds of political shows, I had never heard such vile, name calling...liar, liar, & kill Bush. I was appalled. Then Matthews thought he'd try to copy. Now this stupid from nowhere Ed. How NBC could have the finest show on the air with David Gregory...real class, but all that daily scum that started such vile cable. It has destroyed politics and in turn, our very government and our country. I don't watch Fox, but is saying waterboard on official the same a KILL a president ? Don't get huffy. Don't StART a fire, if you can't stand the heat. There is NO hope for the next generation...with disgusting crap that prevents intelligent discussion of our country's future.

...and then THIS morning (wed) Obama on TV whining that if people just didn't LISTEN to talk on CNN, Fox, pause....somebody prompted him to finally say and MSNBC. I find it appalling in the US that a President or ANY elected official would try to get people to not talk about issues. He was talking about passing health care. He wouldn't have to work at HIDING it all, IF about half of the crap was taken OUT of the bill, and leave in the good parts. He said we have to have the "comprehensive" part....all the icky little details that need to be kept FROM 'the people'.
