8 turn out for meeting to discuss new Pleasanton school superintendent qualifications

Original post made on Jan 28, 2010

A group of eight met with Phil Quon with Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates (HYA) at a public meeting to discuss the strengths and concerns of the school district and what the search firm should look for in considering a successor to Pleasanton School Supt. John Casey, who will retire in June.

Pay attention, Pleasanton. Stop complaining about the leadership at the district if you aren't going to participate in the process of selecting a new superintendent!!!

Thank you to the other 8 community members who did attend the meeting, and to the hundreds who have already returned surveys to Hazard, Young and Attea.

It was a very useful meeting.

Next Tuesday's meeting will probably be the last public update about the search process until after the board selects someone to hire... so come to the board meeting!

Tuesday, Feb. 2, 5 pm for the budget workshop, 7 pm for the board meeting (when HYA will present their report).

I'm not sure if they will still be meeting at the PUSD district office Bernal Room, or if they will be moving the meeting to a bigger location.

Here's the link to the survey: Web Link I'm sure people haven't shown up at the meetings because many have turned in the survey.

Oooops! Just listened to the end of the board meeting from Tuesday -- it's not clear yet when the budget hearing will happen on Tuesday night, and when the part of the meeting focusing on HYA and the superintendent search process will be.

I will update here when the district posts the official agenda for the Feb. 2 meeting.

And Stacey -- I agree, I'm sure that many people participated in the survey who were not able to attend the meeting. Also, I forgot to note that the evening forums were not the only meetings that HYA conducted --- they had meetings scheduled with specific stakeholders (business leaders, principals, PTA leaders.... a whole variety of different stakeholders). They had 4 whole days of meetings scheduled.

Checklist for the new Superintendent

1. Coax the board to give big raises and pensions to administrators
2. Train the bobble heads.....UP DOWN UP DOWN
3. Pull Down 250k
4. Take credit for high test scores in an a school district
populated by mostly affluent highly educated parents.

5. Raise taxes whenever possible
6. When confronted with a problem, hire consultants to give
you the solutions. Choose one and take credit.
7. Persue litigation and loose big time.
8. Have PUSD's credit rating slashed.
9. Hold the most boring meetings imaginable so no one will be awake
when you talk about the important stuff.

I have turned in my survey for the new Supdt. My #1 criterion is that the salary and benefits have to be at least 10% less than Casey's preferably more. Everything else is secondary.

Vinny's comments were excellent. The whole system of the board giving administrators all they want is totally ridiculous. We need to get rid of the Board members that have no backbone. Maybe they are afraid they won't get reelected because the Union will oppose them. We need people that have to stand up to this. This is true of the City council as well with all the city employees including administrators, police, fire and all the other staff.
