I am so disappointed in TVH for sponsoring this. VM is a gross, disgusting view of women and their sexuality. For TVH to be sponsoring something of this nature shows they just don't get the whole idea of women and violence towards women and degradation of women--obviously something they SHOULD get!! DUH!!!

I've already taken steps to remove my support of TVH. If they don't "get" it, they don't deserve community money.

Mary...I wholeheartedly agree with you.

This is a glowing example of "Liberalism Gone Wild" and is one of the many many reasons why I switched from being a liberal to a staunch conservative.

Liberalism degrades a community in particular and society in general and I reject it with every fiber of my being.

So Bob-

Are you one of those "staunch conservatives" like Mark Foley (likes underage male Congressional pages), Larry Craig (likes gay sex in airport bathrooms), Mark Sanford (likes having affairs with Argentinian women), David Vitter (likes prostitutes), and the list goes on.

Yeah, the left has it's share of dirty little secrets too, but the difference is that they are not on cable news crowing about how virtuous and holy they are one minute and resigning in disgrace over a scandal the next.

Obviously, VM is enjoyed by many since it has had a long run in many parts of the country. TVH has produced it before and continues to do so, so they must have widespread support for it.

Curious, your post makes me think of another recent example. The RNC employees' health plan covering abortions. It made me laugh when I read about it.

SHJim, the RNC corrected this oversight in their healthcare plan.
Now only the DNC can get coverage for killing their offspring, for which we're all grateful.

Very typical Republican response.

In our community of "character", is it really right to have a play with the word "vagina" in it. What does that teach our children? Why not use other words in play titles like "penis", "testicles", etc (I'm being polite, as I can think of worse words honestly)...these are not dinner conversation words (at least not at my house!), nor should they be used in the titles of plays. This is the beginning of a decline...just wait for the even more inappropriate deviate titles to come, and they will come. I'm just appalled at Tri-Valley Haven associating themselves with this. I think a few more people will reconsider their donations.

So why is "vagina" a deviant word? It is just a word describing a body part. I may be mistaken, but I think about half of the population has one. I would not be offended if a play came to town that was called the "Penis Principles" or the "Rectum Records" or the "Nipple News" or the "Clitoris Chronicles". If it was entertaining and thoughtful, I would have no problem seeing it or taking my children to see it. If you do not enjoy that type of theater...don't go.

It is 2009, haven't we moved beyond our puritanical roots? There is absolutely nothing wrong with our bodies, sex, or talking about sex. Repressing a healthy understanding of our bodies and how they work albeit it digestion or reproduction doesn't do anything except produce anxiety and depression.

Dear Curious...
You're right...Republicans Mark Foley, David Vitter, Larry Craig, Mark Sanford either admitted or were caught. A main difference is that in general their fellow Republicans publicly chastise their behavior and in most cases strongly encourage them to resign their post.

On the other hand, when Democrats are caught, it becomes a resume enhancer. Fellow Democrats, and the mainstream media, support and defend their acts. I use to be a Democrat until I saw the light that nearly everything they promote has negative consequences and is extremely damaging to a society.

Just say no to the culture of rape and abuse that tends to affect women disproportionately higher than it does men.

I'm new to town and to this paper. In fact, this is my first time reading the comments section. I must say I'm appalled. I expected an intelligent community to move beyond the vitriolic name calling and hate. Can't you just feel the venom when Bob writes "Liberalism" and SHJim writes "RNC"? What's with all of you?! The only thing that will destroy this country is the unwillingness to listen and respect the other side.

As to the subject at hand, no child will be forever damaged by publicly hearing the scientific name of a body part. And, with proper framing and parenting, any subject can and should be explored by the community. I will go and watch the VM when it comes out.

I didn't realize this is how you all "disagree" around here. If so, and if my injecting some common sense is perceived to be childish, then I will gladly sign off and let you continue.

I read the book. I suggest that those arguing against the wording do the same, you may then understand the title. It is about women who suffered abuse.

As for republicans: I am so tired of their "I'm against abortion, no sex outside of marriage, no gays", etc.

Look at them: Palin's pregnant unwed daughter, Sanford and his mistress, the list goes on. I mention these two because they were so vocal against certain things: Palin rejects sex education, Sanford was a harsh critic of Clinto because of the Lewinsky scandal. Stop the nonsense.

Oh yeah, and the RNC only stopped abortion coverage because they got caught...and to think they were so vocal against the health care bill covering abortion!

I have not seen this show, but I want to see it, to keep free speech alive, and because a show like this triggers introspection and thought.

I don't think that someone should be called "puritanical" just because they find the title vulgar. Nor is expressing disgust a sign that someone has a negative attitude towards sex and is trying to repress that side of themselves. Many people view sex as a private matter and don't find it amusing when such names are brandied about in a cavalier way. If someone wants to produce such a play, that's fine, I'm all for free speech, but I don't want things in my face. I avoid things like yahoo email for the same reason because I don't need bikini clad photos of women or racy ads in my face. If I want to see someone in skimpy clothing (or nothing at all) let that be my choice (ie my partner), not something shoved in my face.

Why don't we suggest our Mayor audition for a part? She's proved herself awesome at flappin' her hole.

Take that however you wish.

The odd thing is that Eve Ensler isn't brave enough to use the correct word. If you've seen or read her play, you know that the part of the body being discussed is the vulva, not the vagina. For some reason, our culture is phobic about that word. How many parents tell their daughters that their vulva is their vagina? No one wants to call a female's external genitalia by the correct name.
