Dropping Kids off at School

Original post made by Foothill Parent on Oct 13, 2009

To the driver of a green van with the license number 4MWS606: this morning while dropping off my daughter at Foothill I stopped before pulling into the parking lot to let a girl who was walking across the crosswalk cross the street and you beeped your horn at me and then gave me a dirty look when you passed by me. What did you want me to do, run over the girl? Don't be in such a hurry. We need to be careful.

I appreciate that you stopped. Yesterday pedestrians were crossing Santa Rita Drive and had activated the sparkling path to death (the crosswalk on Santa Rita Drive across from Hollywood Video) lights embedded in the street. I watched at least three cars go right through the crosswalk, just missing the pedestrians. It's a matter of time before someone is killed at that crosswalk.

I agree with your frustration, but disagree with posting someone's license plate number. I think the number should be removed - that's like posting someone's name or other private info.

I was on East Ave. in Livermore once when a van in front of me plowed into a car that had stopped for kids in the crosswalk. Fortunately the van did not cause the car in front to hit the kids & fortunately I was far enough behind the van.

An interesting observation I've made over the last few months of carpooling...Most, if not all PUSD elementary schools have school staff acting as parking lot monitors who help control the flow of traffic, help cross students/parents and try to keep an overall safe and sane drop-off and pick-up situation. However, at the high schools, where there is NO parking lot supervision, it's a different story! Although you might think the students and even the parents are perhaps a little older and wiser, it seems that many just completely ignore any kind of rules of both driving and walking! During one instance, an "extra lane" was created by another driver in what was already a very narrow passage way! He literally had to get out of his car and told another car in front of him to move so that he could pass. Students are constantly running in between cars waiting to pick up kids, never mind the students who are whizzing by on their bikes not wearing any helmets as they rush out of school. It is simply a miracle that (hardly) any kids ever get seriously hurt! Everyone just needs to slow way down, stay alert and be nice.

Julie;

FYI -- License Plate data isn't THAT private anymore. If one is willing to pay for the information, there are various sources on-line that can track down a plate and it's associated details.

Frankly, if this individual really has issue with what happened -- that plate data should be taken to Pleasanton PD and the driver should be cited for failure to obey the rules of the road.

I agree that the WEEKLY should remove the license plate number, based on:

"Hearsay, unsubstantiated facts. etc."

Honking a horn and giving a dirty look is LEGAL!

IF there were unsafe actions, you could have taken the plate number to PPD, but that would be a stretch if no other witnesses and no harm or damage.

If this is a big problem, then perhaps there should be volunteer crossing guards?

Patriot Liberal -- Ya know, you have a valid point about the "Hearsay, unsubstantiated facts. etc."

Perhaps the entire thread should be removed based on the Pleasanton Weekly's censorship practices.

AGR, you make my point - you can look up the plate and it's "associated details" (name of vehicle owner?). If we can't post names, we shouldn't post plate numbers. Would you want someone to get (Word removed as offensive for Town Square Forum) off at you & post your license plate number here? The appropriate recipient of the plate number is the police, not a Pleasanton Weekly blog!

If some nut case went after the owner of that car, or their family, the Weekly would have liability.

Think about it, if the "hearsay, unsubstantiated facts" policy was strictly enforced, half the posts on this forum would be removed...

Opp's!!! I just posted an "unsubstantiated fact"!!!

Julie;

If people don't want their personal information (in this case, their license number) posted on a web forum, then perhaps they should use good sense when interacting with other human beings.

Remember - "Stupid is as Stupid does." "Green van" acted stupidly, which resulted in the initial post which you apparently think is equally stupid. It's all about behavior and accountability, something many human beings forget about these days.

Patriot Liberal -- The Weekly appears to care little for liability. Remember, one of the biggest offenders for posting personal information on this forum is Jeb Bing himself.
