Politics and IOC

Original post made by Long Time Resident, Another Pleasanton neighborhood, on Oct 2, 2009

This sums up on how much influence America has. Even Obama and all his charisma cannot turn the tide...

"The race for the 2016 Olympics has come down to just Rio de Janeiro and Madrid, with the International Olympic Committee eliminating Chicago in a stunning first round of voting. Tokyo was knocked out in the second round."

Note: US was knocked out on the first round even with both Barack and Michelle Obama pleading for Chicago.

"Chicago's elimination was one of the most shocking defeats in IOC voting history. It had long been seen as a front-runner and got the highest possible level of support — from President Barack Obama himself."

What does this tell us?

Ha, so much for another poster's theory that it was already known they were going to pick Chicago and President Obama just wanted to make sure he got credit for it! We had a 25% chance and we lost. Next...

I'm upset because I spent 2 days preparing for all the "Obama just swooped in cuz he knew they were going to get it anyway" rants and now I have to deal with all the "chicago would have gotten it if Obama hadn't tried to bully the IOC with his overwhelming charisma" rants. And please, lets extrapolate this into a complete breakdown of Obama's foreign policy.

Of course my disappointment can be nothing next to Glenn Beck's who's been preparing a week's worth of shows about this being a big payoff to Obama's political cronies in chicago...guess not...guess Beck will have to scrap that and do more birther stuff...

Either way, I saw several news flashes of conservatives celebrating this "stunning defeat" (Malkin, Redstate, Drudge). I guess it's now kosher to cheer against america, because whatever is good for America is good for Obama, so we must continue to hope bad things happen to America so that Obama looks bad. And this coming from those who claim liberals as "the blame America first crowd" and claim liberals wanted us to lose in iraq...ahh, Patriotism.

Did you hear where this absolute Olympic rejection of Obama was reported in the NYT? In the Sports Section! This is hilarious and huge evidence (as if we needed more) of how BIASED and in-the-tank for Obama this worthless rag is.

That's...so...weird. Because I just checked their home page and there are three headlines front and center about the IOC selection and the rejection of Chicago. Yeah, the Times is a real fish wrapper.

Maybe we lost because the rest of the world has become scared to death of just how idiotic our national public discourse can be. I mean, we can't even afford our own President a little decorum and we tote guns into town hall meetings.

Stacey,

Did you watch the video of the guy with the gun outside the town hall meeting? The guy carrying the gun was black.

Stay Cool,

The point should be obvious to even you. Any one bucking Obama is either a racist, conservative, or Bush did it worse. Race has nothing to do with as he is just not getting it done.

Rita,
Race has nothing to do with Stacey's post. Or any of the posts in this thread. Except yours.

Does someone here have "pre-broadcast" privileges to Glenn Beck's TV program? If so what's happening next week? Tell us so we won't need to watch...

Wait a minute --- Now I get it! It's just someone being cute... Silly me...

Stay Cool,

Let's be honest here. Stacey put that one in about guns at town halls so that people would think it was white conservatives and they were out to get Obama. I do not believe that at all and believe in all cases that we should be objective rather than just blindly defending his non action or non accomplishments thus far in his presidency.

stimulus- not effective thus far
healthcare- stuck in limbo
cap and trade- stuck in limbo
Afghanistan- back pedaling and we are not losing with more young americans killed each and everyday
Olympics- down in flames
Unemployment- increasing and will go over 10% soon

whatever is good for America is good for Obama - true
whatever is good for Obama is good for America - not true

If there are political payoffs and corruption in the USOC, Chicago 2016 bid, etc, do you want them investigated? Or should we look the other direction because hosting an Olympics is so good for America?

And PB, since you say Beck is now going back to 'birther stuff', please point out where he was doing 'birther stuff' previously?

Why is it that your posts have nothing to say? It's because you twist and contort facts. You create concepts and try to paint them as the ideas of those with a conservative agenda. Simply put, every time you post here, you tell lies.

And to round it out, if we'd have pulled out of Iraq in the middle of the fight, then we lost. In military parlance, it's called surrender. And I can start posting quotes from the Dem side of the aisle and liberal pundits from the pre-surge era saying it is time to get out. Ergo, they wanted us to lose.

Actually, I put that one in to illustrate how scary we, as a country, must look to foreigners. I'm not sure how you took that and decided it was about "getting Obama".

Would you send your child off to study in a country where they were shooting each other every day and the citizens walk around with guns at government gatherings?

Stacey,

Don't you think you might have a tendency to stretch the truth just a little bit. A few shootings out of 300,000,000 when you consider our approval of drugs is not so high and one african american with a gun at an obama town hall does not make millions. Additionally, we do not need kids coming here from other countries when we cannot even afford to educate our own. We need to create jobs in this country and that is only done through tax REDUCTIONS not increasing the burden on business. Ever get a job from a poor guy?

Well, as Senator Ensign said, those shooting deaths shouldn't count with regard to health care statistics, because, well - we Americans do love our guns! Wahoo!

Michael,

That's the point though, right? It isn't about what you or I perceive as truth. It is what the rest of the world views of us as a country. While you and I may have a different perspective, media has a tendency to hyperfocus upon the ridiculous. Which image of America do you think the rest of the world sees?

Hmmm, maybe it was just because Rio did a much better job of presenting their city as a place for the Olympics and they have never been held in South America. I hate to hear people think this was some sort of slight against the US. The US has hosted the Olympics many many times, and the committee wanted to given another country a chance. What is the problem? I'm happy that they did. That is what they are suppose to do.

Stacey,

Things are particularly absurd here on the Pleasanton Weekly forums. You really don't get this kind of nonsense on the Palo Alto Weekly forums, for instance. Could be because kids there have less time to waste, given all the pressure to succeed.

I'm also getting the impression that Pleasanton is a bit of an anomaly for the Bay Area. The community doesn't seem to value formal education as much as other affluent Bay Area towns. I can't put my finger on it. People seem a bit lazy? You've been here a while, What do you think?

Reader,

I have to assume you are being sarcastic about eh Palo Alto kids, but you bring up a good point about valuing a formal education. It does seem that a lot of Pleasanton residents while probably highly educated themnselves, don't seem to recognize the importance of education.
