Alta Bates fined for surgery mishap

Original post made by SFGate, Another Pleasanton neighborhood, on Sep 25, 2009

Alta Bates Summit Medical Center was one of 11 hospitals cited by the state this week for patient safety violations, the California Department of Public Health said Thursday. The Berkeley hospital will pay a $25,000 fine and has already submitted a plan to correct the mistake, which occurred last year when an object was left in a patient's body after surgery.

The Alta Bates violation stemmed from an incident last December, when a 79-year-old patient went in for surgery to repair a heart valve. During the surgery, a ring sizer - a disc about the size of a quarter, used to measure the valve opening during repair - was left in the sac that encloses the heart.

The ring sizer was taken out about two weeks after the initial operation, and required major open-heart surgery to remove. The patient need a tracheotomy after the surgery and went into kidney failure.

Now we need some class action lawyers to come in and sue the hospital for $100 billion million dollars so this will never happen again.

And the reason for your posting this is...oh, I don't know, maybe that hospitals are dangerous places and people make mistakes. Kaiser has problems, Alta-Bates has problems and guess what...so does Pleasanton's very own Valley Care.
Fined for "The failure to ensure safe distribution and administration of drugs was the direct cause of the life threatening events to Patients 1 and 2 (mother and child). A medication administration error resulted in Patient 1's narcotic overdose and respiratory arrest, and an unplanned C-Section for her newborn infant (Patient 2), and fetal asphyxia of Patient 2 requiring resuscitation and transfer to the Intensive Care Nursery...."
