Stripping the Rights of Citizens

Original post made by Stacey, Amberwood/Wood Meadows, on May 6, 2009

Interesting news. I brought this issue up when the local news about Andreas San Diego being moved to FBI's most wanted list came up and how he'll have his rights stripped if he's caught (yet criminals like Charles Manson retain their rights). Now here it is again, only with someone else who didn't even commit a crime.

"Mom says Patriot Act stripped son of due process" Web Link

"We have no rights under the Patriot Act to even defend them, because the Patriot Act basically supersedes the Constitution," she said. "It wasn't intended to drag your barely 16-year-old, 120-pound son out in the middle of the night on a charge that we can't even defend."

Man.. I'm glad Bush didn't do this. It would be headline, above the fold news!!

Who takes a 16yo minor 768mi/11hrs56min away from home and family to jail. They don't have county lock-ups in Raleigh??

For anyone who can't picture Oxford NC to South Bend IN [say Notre Dame Univ.].. picture from here to Sacramento and South Bend is about the same distance from Chicago.

A 16yo from NC to near Chicago! Obama and his Justice [?] Dep't is sending [bad] tingles up my leg!!

We have no way of knowing if this youngster is innocent, or guilty, until the investigation is completed. We only have his mothers opinion... Just because no bomb making material was found in the home doesn't mean much...

I suppose one could look at this in two directions...

1)The youngster is indeed innocent and all will turnout well after all is said and done. But, if indeed someone hacked into this young man's IP address for the purposes the mother stated, why wasn't this reported to the local authorities when it was discovered. Why wait for something like this to happen then inform the authorities.

If the FBI can trace the threat to an individual Internet IP, isn't it possible they can also trace a "hackers" IP back to them. I'm not a computer expert(I just know how to turn them "on" and "off")so I'm merely asking the question...

2)The FBI, taking bomb threats seriously(as they should),simply did what we expect of them before "someone" could detonate a bomb injuring or killing innocent people. What criticism would the FBI endure if this was indeed an authentic bomb threat and they took no action to prevent it...

I have no problem with law enforcement being proactive in cases such as this. In my opinion, persons that detonate bombs, or issue a threat to "bomb", for the purpose of injuring people or destroying property are "terrorist"...

If someone has a problem with the Patriot Act as it is written, take it up with your elected politicians that allow it to remain a tool in situtations such as this. Better yet, one should not put themselves in a situtation where the Act can be used against them...

This could probably have been prevented if the youngster, or his mother(who seemed to be aware of the situtation), had reported the "hacker problem" when it was discovered...

Charlie Manson may have all his rights but little good they do him. He'll never see the other side of the bars during the remainder of his lifetime. He can have fun playing his little games with the parole board, but that's all...

The article is very poorly written. Only one side of the story is shared. Law enforcement officials refuse to comment, but the writer fails to find sources that will defend the actions of the government agencies. My antenna goes up when news articles are filled with emotional quotes from one side only. The bias of the writer is clear.

Apparently the link to the Patriot Act is bogus...
