Teacher and Management Contributions

The managers have volunteered, for this year, to give salary donations back to the District totaling $40,000. For 2009/10, they have agreed to a 3-day contract rollback and additional voluntary salary reductions, totaling $129,000. They have also agreed to reduce mileage stipends, saving the District approximately $85,000. Consequently, for this year and next, the management team has contributed $254,000 to be part of the budget solution.

Assuming Measure G passes, certificated staff voted overwhelming to reduce their work year by two days next year. The two-day reduction will be achieved by reducing the previous three mandatory Staff Development Days to one day of mandatory Staff Development. The total of this contribution is about $760,000 in savings.

The total dollar amount of these contributions is $1 million dollars.

The car allowances are just another blob of fat in the budget that PUSD did nothing about until Pleasanton community members questioned why it was costing the taxpayers $120K PER YEAR, to cover vehicle operating costs for dozens of administrators and staff who live within 10 miles of their school sites or the district office.
They didn't need the allowances to cover the costs of using their vehicles for school related business. They didn't even need it to cover their costs to get to and from work.
The car allowances gave PUSD a way to give PUSD administrators a raise without the trouble of a contract negotiation which would have been made public.
The only reason PUSD is able to cut $85K from the $120K a year cost is because they should not have been spending it in the first place.
Thank the community members who brought this expense into the open so it could be stopped.

Meanwhile the district will be paying out Step and Column increases. No money for our kids, but there is money for raises! This is wrong. I want to help our schools, but not by letting myself be taken advantage of.

The total dollar amount of the Step & Column raises for the same period of time is $15 MILLION dollars!
Would someone please add up all of the perks that still remain and the administrators raises that they tricked the board into approving two weeks before the state froze raises?

justwondering-Tony E doesn't comment he just posts and then fades into the night. So to the famous Tony E:
On a previous post "What makes this different..."budget crisis"? (4-27-09) you comment that the State's shortfalls were well known and even with that the district still kept giving raises. And now you "boast" about this minor district sacrifice. With all that's happened and with the State's shortfalls still glaring, the district still wants to give raises on the backs of property owners? Your reasoning is so convulted that I doubt I can take you seriously.

Many people have been throwing around the "$15 million in salary increases over the next four years".

This number has nothing to do with reality. The teachers' contract with the school district ends in June 2010, and beyond that, we don't know what teacher salaries will be.

The district may enter negotiations with a proposal for salary freezes, or even salary reductions. They can't do that this year because the current contract is multi-year, and it is not legal for one party to try to renegotiate the contract after it is already in effect.

The total amount that the district spends on teacher pay depends on two things -- the salary schedule in the contract, and the number of teachers on the payroll. That's why the district trustees have been forced to move forward with teacher layoffs. Their only option for reducing the costs of teacher pay is to reduce the number of teachers on the payroll.

I worked in the business world for over 30 years and I never saw an agreement with a labor union that was not multi-year and any contract can be ammended through a "letter of agreement" between the parties. If this school district has a contract with the teacher's union that does not include recourse to the "letter of agreement" process, then they need to hire new negotiators.

Ah...the power of the teachers union in CA. All that money, all those votes. But some people recognize that real purpose of the California Teachers Union

I see in today's ad that the management team is SO generous. They agreed to give back an equivalent of 0.5% of their salary. WOW! A whole one half of one percent. I can hardly contain my excitement.

how generous -YES! Good answer!!

And moreover, I'd like to know if that money is now going to secure class size reduction - the most important of issues to this community as the district well knows! And so what percentage if not all? And how many pinked teachers get to stay?

Let's stay fired up people to get this district back online.

We would like those facts and figures soon, PUSD.

I truly think they (PUSD Admin) are reading/lurking/observing these posts. And they should...we're not happy with what YOU are doing over there with OUR money. Looking forward to ending some perks to put toward the general budget. I think car budgets should be nixed. Let them get mileage reimbursement for their own cars like the rest of the staff that work for a district!

Sandy, The impact of 14+% in raises from 2005-08 isn't going to disappear or be negotiated away. And there has been an answer that the S&C could be as low as $6 million under certain conditions (like everyone retires). That leaves $12 million from the parcel tax . . . and even if $8 million is CSR, what's the other $4? No matter which way you cut this, a lot more money is being asked for than is likely needed, at a time that many can't afford it, and before the district has all the very real information on what it needs after the federal funds are sent.
