COMMENTARY: The Pleasanton Weekly--newly designed, easier to read

Original post made on Apr 17, 2009

Ever find yourself looking at a co-worker who just shaved off his moustache or a female colleague who's sporting a new hairstyle, but you just can't quite pinpoint why they look different? That might be what some of you are thinking about the new look of today's Pleasanton Weekly, where we've made a number of subtle, or in the case of our new nameplate, not-so-subtle changes.

I do like the new font. Helvetica gets boring. I'm still undecided on the new logo. The new white space is bothersome.

I like the idea of the ridge in the background except because of the fuzzed out look the top of the ridge with a stark white background, looks more like a torn paper.. I think it could look much richer and visually read better if you added a collage background of black or gray lines of perhaps an old town sketch with the ridge layered on top in green then the "Pleasanton Weekly" would stand out with charm. It's too stark against a white background.

Just a thought :)

Don't like the new logo. I've seen better. Looks like any ordinary magazine title. Please put the emphasis back on Pleasanton by highlighting it in some way. Maybe put a graphic behind the word Pleasanton using the mountains or lines there. The way it is now, it looks like a smudge of paint. C'mon, photoshop and illustrator can do better than that .

Was the Pleasanton Weekly difficult for anybody to read before?

I like the new font - it seems more readable. The new logo is a non-starter. C'mon, you've got to be kidding with that one. BRING BACK THE OLD LOGO!

This is a joke right. The average 5th grader and his computer could do a better job on the title/banner. This is a joke, right? This was April Fools a couple of weeks late, right? Ol' Jeb isn't hitting the sauce, is he?

I am not excited about the new look. It looks less refined and the front page banner is much more boring then the one it replaced. I have no idea how the old style was anything other then easy to read as I found it to be.

It looked much better before. Why change an attractive cover? Isn't money tight?

Why is calling someone angry an insult? Are we all supposed to be residents of Stepford?

If the layout guys are bored over there and are looking for work, why not send them to the high school to offer a little help, instead of wasting time with the new design. NO? I thought liberal news organization loved philathropy...Oh, right! Only at other's expense. So is the cost of the PW going up now to cover your cutting edge graphics? Or are you guys just getting a cut of Measure G for supporting it in your stories?

Ooooh!!!
