Hate crime? Certainly, it was a cowardly, criminal, and childish act. We have many laws that cover this situation. However, to classify this as a "hate crime" is terrifying. Instead of judging acts, which in this case are clearly wrong, we are judging thoughts.
Well that is the whole point of such crimes to "terrorize" the
victims and sympathizers. This wasn't random pointless vandalism,
but targeted, hateful terrorism.
These are exactly what the hate crimes laws were intended to
BTW, some similar crimes happened in Torrance CA over the weekend
and the Torrance police have no problem labeling a duck a duck.
How can hate crimes occur in a self styled Community of Character???
It is a Community of Characters. The S fell off the sign awhile ago.
Goodness, this screams racial hate crime and what on earth could you be thinking that this mostly "white" area wouldn't have a hate crime? HELLO! It's everywhere...NO PLACE is off limits to the stupid thinking and actions of ignorant people. And being from the LA area coming to move to a more less traffic/congested area...which I agree, Torrance's police would call a duck a duck...because there's a plethora of diverse cultures down there and everyone down there knows what's up and going on to call out what type of a crime it was. It's a very sad state, that there are still people out there and we, as a society, have not progressed, got informed of all races, cultures, and the lot...It's very scary and I pray for all those out there to get their head out of their you know whats...cause America is a melting pot. As a friend of mine best said, "we all eat, drink, sleep and s*it, the same...we are all humans deserving of respect and love and kindness, no matter what your opinions are!"
According to the Dept of Justice, FBI website the definition of a "hate crime" is as follows:
"A hate crime, also known as a bias crime, is a criminal offense committed against a person, property, or society that is motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender's bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin."
This family is the only African American family on Kern Court. Similar political signs were displayed in their (white) neighbors lawns, but those properties were not defaced/damaged. Sure seems like a targeted, biased crime to me.
Because it terrifies you, you want to hide your eyes and cover your ears, and tell yourself that this kind of cowardly action just doesn't happen in Pleasanton. Unfortunately, it can and does. What we do about it will make the difference.
You obviously read these blogs. There's a lot of hate spewed in the entries on this site - and a quite a few of these people are parents. If the Kern Court crime turns out to be by teenagers, where do you think they got their example from? Do you think the hate in these blogs is all contained here and doesn't spill over into home and work life? I don't.
You can't fix something you don't acknowledge (thank you Dr. Phil!). Wouldn't it be great if Pleasanton (including those who blog here) would stand up and support the principle that "hate is not tolerated". That includes bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin.
But gee, that would mean we really are a "community of character". . .
Rae, thank you for your posting.
I am interested in learning more about the racial hatred posted on this site that you refer to. Would you mind pointing some out?
I would think the PW Staff would also be interested. Thank You.
Note that it is the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht in Germany, when the Nazi's broke the windows and defaced Synagogues and Jewish businesses.
Today the Mormons are performing proxy baptisms of the Jews killed in Nazi concentration camps contrary to the wishes of the Jewish Holocaust survivors and the Jewish community.
The City of Pleasanton should be ashamed of the silence of its elected officials and citizens about the vandalism of the residence on Kern Court.
Is Pleasanton becoming like Nazi Germany?
Shame on this community...

...info/viewpoint that has nothing to do with this thread.
except that it is another form of racism!
Wait a minute, History!!!
I'm a member of this community(Pleasanton)and I take exception to your inference that I may be "becoming like Nazi Germany"...
I have no idea who vandalized the home on Kern Court(I only know it wasn't me)or the mindset of those involved. At this time the PPD apparently doesn't know either. One can only hope they solve this crime in a timely manner...
Instead of "shooting from the hip", in my opinion, we should wait for all the details to surface before assuming with certainty we know the reason/mind set for the vandalism. Only the people living in that particular neighborhood may know the "mood of the neighborhood" that could lead to actions such as these, if, per chance, it came from that neighborhood...
I certainly don't think an entire community("shame on this community")should be condemned for the actions of idiots that may/may not reside in Pleasanton. With that said - No!! Not "shame on this community" - shame on those involved... It's very tiresome to be lumped in with those that commit stupidity when I'm not involved or have no knowledge of when, where, why. Unfortunately, this seems the modus operandi of the PC "blame society" crowd these days...
By the way, since I know very little about Mormon Church rituals, how can one equate the Mormon proxy baptisms with what happened on Kern Court??? Educate me...
History & anonymous,
Are you equating what the Nazis did in Europe to our local story and our local community or are you claiming there's another racial story in Pleasanton by saying our hometown Mormons are practicing racism?
As a Pleasanton resident of 20 years who moved away 12 years ago I am sorry to hear that this is what is going on in my former community. I hope this was not an act of racism but due to the lack of diversity and the exclusivity of the neighborhoods, one must wonder. When I visit I notice that the community has changed considerably. My three children were raised in Pleasanton and I loved the small hometown feel it had back in the day. Now, Pleasanton faces some serious issues that arise when a town grows up. I hope the Pleasanton Police Department can get to the bottom of this and protect its citizens from further incidents of a similar nature.
allittle off the subject but thought following was cool
also thought it interesting on what groups the "no on 8" went after and what groups they apparently avoided.
PJ are you still a catholic bishop?
