Pooch Parade back at First Wednesday August 2nd

Original post made by Ptown Mom, Another Pleasanton neighborhood, on Jul 12, 2008

Plan to bring your pooch to the Annual Pooch Parade at First Wednesday on August 6. Proceeds to benefit the Tri-Valley Guide Dog Puppy Raisers!

When thousands of humans gather downtown for the August First Wednesday street party next month, four-legged canines will join them, strutting their stuff in the popular Pooch Parade.

The parade coincides with the August street festival and will feature at least 100 dogs of all shapes, breeds and sizes, some costumed, others au naturel.

Registration begins at 5 p.m. The pooches will begin to line up around at Lions Wayside Park on First Street and the parade down Main Street starts at 6 p.m.

There will be contest categories pet owners can enter their dogs in.

The event, always a crowd pleaser, benefits the Tri-Valley Guide Dog Puppy Raisers, a local nonprofit that trains puppies to become guide dogs for the blind. For information, visit www.pleasantondowntown.net or trivalleyguidedogs.home.comcast.net

Oh it's too late to be clear on the details! Corrections below.

Date is August 6th!

Registration time is 6 pm.

Fee is $10.

Can someone please edit possibly!

Blame it on the heat and the smoke.

It was very hot during the pooch parade last summer. Some of the dogs were covered in costumes, and we all stood in the direct sun while people blabbered at us through a megaphone. Whatever they were saying was unintelligible and not important. The dogs were literally suffering in the heat. Dogs suffer far more in hot conditions, and it was terrible that they were made to stand on a hot day in direct sun, some with cloth costumes, while we listened to gibberish through a megaphone.

Do the organizers of this parade realize the pavement on Main Street is still hot at that time of day. Hot pavement can injure a dog's foot pads. I wouldn't allow my dog to be on pavement at that time of day. Can't this parade be held on grass in a nearby park.......

Animals do suffer in the heat. Ask that nobody put garments on their pooch, have plenty of water available and hold the parade on grass, preferably under shade trees.

If the organizers can't accomodate such a humane request, don't show up with your pets!
