Tri-Valley Repertory Theatre is holding tryouts for "Shrek the Musical" at 7:30 p.m. April 7 and 8, with callback by invitation only April 10. Auditions are held at the Tri-Valley Repertory Theatre, 1020 Serpentine Lane, Suite 101, in Pleasanton.
The musical will be produced by special arrangement with Music Theatre International from July 19 through Aug. 3 at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore, with producer Kathleen Breedveld, director Carol W. Hovey, choreographer Kevin Hammond, vocal direction by Sierra Dee and musical direction by Jo Anne Fosseman.
The characters are Shrek (male, 25-45), a talking donkey (male, 20-40), a dragon (female, 25-45), ensemble fairy tale creatures (ages 8 and older), Fiona (female, 20-30), Gingy (female, 16-40), Lord Farquaad (male, 30-45) and Pinocchio (male, 16-40).
To try out, prepare one minute of a contemporary musical theater song for the primary audition, and bring a second selection as a backup, but do not sing a song from the show. Bring sheet music in your key; an accompanist will be provided. Dance auditions will be held at callbacks.
Those auditioning are encouraged to provide a headshot and resume of their onstage experience, and a list of potential conflicts starting on May 12. Rehearsal dates are usually, but not limited to, Sunday evenings, Monday through Thursday nights and Saturday days. Those chosen for the roles do not receive payment.
