Chamber endorses Hosterman for mayor, Pentin for council
Stoneridge Drive extension a key factor in group's support

Bookmark and Share
The Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce Wednesday endorsed Mayor Jennifer Hosterman for re-election in the Nov. 4 municipal race and businessman Jerry Pentin for one of the two seats open on the City Council.

The chamber's political action committee interviewed Hosterman and her challenger Steve Brozosky, and also Pentin and Councilman Matt Sullivan, who is seeking re-election. Councilwoman Cindy McGovern chose not to interview with the chamber committee, according to Scott Raty, president and chief executive officer of the chamber.

Although two seats are available, with both McGovern and Sullivan completing their first four year terms of office, the chamber endorsed only Pentin and neither of the two incumbents.

In its endorsement announcement, the chamber said it also interviewed Brozosky, but otherwise made no other mention of his candidacy.

Businessman Otis Nostrand, who chairs the chamber's political action committee, praised Hosterman's actions and accomplishments as mayor in the area of transportation improvement, a key chamber goal.

"In this regard, Mayor Hosterman was instrumental in securing a unanimous vote of the City Council to keep the Stoneridge Drive extension in the General Plan," Nostrand said.

According to Nostrand, this allowed Pleasanton to continue its process with Alameda County to annex the Staples Ranch property which, in turn, is a key component to keeping the Hendrick Auto dealerships (and their $3 million in annual tax revenues, and the proposed plan for a community ice skating facility proposed by a subsidiary of the San Jose Sharks in Pleasanton.

"Along the way, Mayor Hosterman has forged or improved her relationships with political colleagues in other cities and counties in the area and is now positioned as a senior politician who is in line to participate in or lead influential governmental committees in the area, including the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency," Nostrand said.

"These connections can enable (her) to influence highway and other expenditures that could be instrumental to securing strategic highway and other traffic improvements for the Tri-Valley area, including State Route 84," he added.

"Based on her growth and maturation during her tenure as both a City Council member and mayor of Pleasanton, we believe Mayor Hosterman is the best candidate for the job and best positioned to be influential in helping Pleasanton achieve its goals," he continued. "Accordingly, we strongly endorse Jennifer Hosterman for another term as mayor of Pleasanton."

For the council seat, the chamber PAC said it believed Pentin is "the best qualified and most closely aligned with Pleasanton 2015: A Community Vision (a chamber program)," Nostrand said. "Our support of Jerry Pentin is not just because he is a long time local businessman, it is because of the quality of Jerry's positions on issues and his track record of decisive leadership as a parks and recreation commissioner."

Pentin serves on the board of the Firehouse Arts Center. He also has been an advocate for extending Stoneridge Drive, although he has said the extension should be built along with other regional actions to curb cut-through traffic in Pleasanton, including widening State Route 84.

"Jerry believes a councilman's job is to represent the interests of his constituents, but not necessarily by public referendum every time there is an issue," said Nostrand. "He also agrees that, while the interests of small (and sometimes vocal) groups of residents and individual neighborhoods are important, the interests of the community as a whole are paramount and will sometimes require decisions that are not popular with individual interest groups."

"The Chamber is impressed with Pentin's service to the community, and his ability to be an effective leader," Nostrand added. "The Chamber is pleased to endorse him for City Council."

Members of the chamber's political action committee who interviewed candidates and voted on their endorsements were Nostrand, Bob Butler, Steve Clarkson, Gail Gilpin, Martin Inderbitzen, Dick Karn, Bill James, Joe Sasek, John Sensiba, Jim McKeehan and Raty.

What exactly has Hosterman done where the Chamber would even want to support her? She is bad for small-businesses which create the most jobs and bring in the largest tax revenues. I don't think they are looking at the big picture.

Be sure and read the last paragraph that states who was on the Chamber selection committee. It includes Marty Inderbitzen, attorney for the Oak Grove/Lin/James Tong development. Jim McKeehan of Signature Properties, another local developer, also was a participant. Perhaps that will answer why the Chamber supports Hosterman versus Brozosky.

It also shows just how a Measure QQ committee would be influenced by developers participation in that process. I worked for a developer at one time. I know better now than to listen to who or what they want me to vote for.

The fact that we only have Hosterman or Brozosky to choose from saddens me a lot more than who the chamber elected to endorse. Having been a Pleasanton resident since 1984, we have not had a real leader of this city since Ken Mercer. They have all been downhill since. I just can't bring myself to even hold my nose to vote for either of them. Too bad the "change" mantra never made it to the local level. Is this really the best that Pleasanton has to offer?

How many voters really care who the Chamber of Commerce endorses? I suppose an endorsement means money in the candidate's coffers which will allow them to distribute more propaganda to my mailbox than their rival.

Wonder if Mr. McKeehan will endorse any of the PUSD candidates...:)

Yeah your right "Pro-Law", I'd rather take advice from a forum in a local newspaper than a diverse committee made up up big and small business concerns by the Chamber. At least this way business get an idea and unified voice of recommendation. Easy to put stuff down, why don't you recommend how to do it better?

Most on this forum are more hung up in pointing fingers and complaining than making an effort to have a positive impact IMHO.

I'll add that while you pick the 2 particular targets to go after in Mr's McKeehan and Inderbitzen, why don't you mention that the other members of the commitee include an ex superintendant of Schools for PUSD Bill James, Small Business owners (on and off main street) in Otis Nostrand and Joe Sasek, and Vic Malatesta and Long time Pleasanton residents and contributors Richard Karn and Steve Clarkson, Attorney John Sensiba and past Director of Economic Development for the City of Pleasanton Gail Gilpin. Clearly a _very_ deverse group. There is an aweful lot of Rush Limbaugh that goes on with these boards, ie... taking little snipets of disparet information and weaving all of them together to tell a convienient story.

Oh whew the facts!

I understand that it was unanimous too...This diverse group all chose to endorse one mayoral candidate, many of who were also on the committee during the last election and chose no endorsement that time.

Hmmm. . .what to make out of that. . .?

What to make out of that? Either it is because they think Hosterman has matured as a mayor since the last election or they don't want Brozosky anymore. Personally I think it is a combination of both.

The Chamber of Commerce represents business interests in our community and are one perspective. Interestingly enough, both Labor and Business endorse Hosterman this time around. Now how often do those groups agree? That is what makes endorsements interesting, to see different groups with different perspectives agree on one candidate. Seems like Hosterman is the choice for 2008.

I do my best to try to keep informed about local politics but suggesting Hosterman "matured" as a mayor makes the muscles in my neck get bigger from shaking my head back and forth trying to figure that one out.

I'd like to add that is NOT an endorsement of Brozosky by any means.

Both candidates are significantly over-rated by their supporters. I just can't see myself pulling the lever for either of them.

This is not just my opinion, but among my family and in the small social group I mingle, I find this to be true.

When I overheard commuters at the P BART station saying the same thing, it validated my opinion that both have been bad news for P town.

I agree she's matured. In my opinion, she's matured to the point of discovering ways to gain positions she hopes will further her political career.

I suppose the same could be said about a number of "local politicians"...
