Flags were erected in several areas around the city today, honoring those lost just seven years ago in the attacks on America.

Cars entering the Valley Christian Center campus were greeted by 2,977 American flags. Over 200 junior and senior high school students gathered around the flags this morning to pray for 2,977 seconds.

"Too often, the tragedy of September 11 is overlooked in schools across our nation," the students wrote in a statement. "Innocent lives were lost on that September 2001 morning and we at Valley Christian Junior and Senior High School are committed to ensuring that those lives do not go unnoticed, along with the patriots who continually fight for our freedom each day."

The Chapel Leadership and Conservative Leadership Club joined together to bring the day of remembrance to the school, which began this morning and will continue later in the day with chapel services. Marines will also be on hand for further prayer, worship, a flag folding ceremony and a speaker.

At Thoratec Corp. a memorial stands honoring Tom Burnett Jr., the senior vice president and chief operating officer who was aboard United Flight 93 heading to San Francisco from Newark, N.J. Burnett is now known for being one of the heroes to avert the terrorist's plans.

At 7 this evening in Livermore, military service group Operation SAM will be honoring those involved in 9/11, as well as veterans from all conflicts and civil service men and women.

There will be three speakers who will reflect on their experiences surrounding 9/11 and military service.

The event will be held at the Livermore Veterans' Memorial Hall, located at 5th and L streets in Livermore. Doors open at 6:30 and seating is limited.
