Hacienda Business Park getting sporty
New 24 Hour Fitness super sport gym to replace former Tri-Valley Herald building

| The only newspapers circulating at the Tri-Valley Herald's former building on Willow Road will be the ones exercisers will read as they work out on treadmills at a new, bigger 24 Hour Fitness. The proposed 56,000-square-foot facility plans were recently approved by the Planning Commission.
According to city planning documents, the fitness corporation plans to operate a "super sport club," the second-highest level it offers, at 4770 Willow Road in the Hacienda Business Park. When that happens, the new club will replace the existing 24 Hour Fitness club, which is an "active club"--one of the lowest levels, located at 5860 W. Las Positas Blvd., according to the city staff report.
When asked about the new facility, a person who answered the phone at the West Las Positas 24 Hour Fitness said that information was incorrect, but declined to say anything further. A company spokesman confirmed that a new facility would be opening in the business park, replacing the current facility, but declined to answer when it would open.
James Paxson, general manager of the Hacienda Business Park Owners Association, said he is thrilled that the fitness giant is relocating to the business park, one of the largest parks of its kind in Northern California.
"We're really excited," he said. "This is one of those win-win-win-win-win situations, not only doing it to keep an existing tenant (in the city), we're putting them in a facility that I think is going to allow them to expand and provide additional services beyond what they're providing now."
"They have lots of clients in the (business) park so this gives those clients more choices and bigger benefits and it also provides a fantastic use in an area that we're trying to energize," he added.
The two-story building 24 Hour Fitness will operate out of was occupied by the Tri-Valley Herald newspaper up until this past spring, when Denver-based Media News, which owns the paper, decided to consolidate operations. Many in the editorial staff and most of the accounting, human resources, circulation and clerical workers have since moved into Media News Group buildings at 127 Spring St. in Pleasanton, Bishop Ranch or Walnut Creek. The building was constructed soon after the City Council approved it in June 1989. The Herald moved in and had occupied the facility for nearly 20 years.
A super sport level club typically offers a main gym, an indoor swimming pool, two spas, a sauna, steam room, indoor basketball court, cardio exercise room, two group exercise rooms, men's and women's locker rooms and a kids' club area, according to the city staff report. The next closest super sport is located in San Ramon.

Is there enough business in town to support both Club Sport and the new 24 Hour Fitness?
Would really hate to see Club Sport impacted as they have been huge for the area for so many years.

Posted by Lisa, a resident of Dublin, on Aug 21, 2008 at 1:58 pm That's great news - I'm just wondering how much they will charge existing members (all club except super sport), to go to this new facility. Since they are closing the existing facility, I would hope they give a discount. Prices I heard they charge range from an additional $10 to $20/month (that's on top of your yearly fee). Keep in mind, these members have already prepaid 3 years dues to get the yearly fee they are paying. I heard it might be cheaper to sign up for their "grand opening" specials - which might be $999 for 3 years and then $19/year after that? Anyone have any experience with these Super Sport clubs?

Posted by mark, a resident of the Vineyard Avenue neighborhood, on Aug 21, 2008 at 3:41 pm I've been to these before... at the end of the day, it's just another 24 hour fitness, except you have to pay more for a few more machines. It's a bummer they are expanding, because if I am paying for a higher end gym, I'd rather join ClubSport.

Low initiation fee ($40-$50) and $16/month thereafter. It's clean and they have everything you need for cardio and lifting which includes free weights, and a lot of nice machines. No pool, bar, or luxury locker rooms, but you get what you pay for here... Former member of Club Sport also...too much $ for what I used it for.

Posted by Tony, a resident of the Downtown neighborhood, on Aug 24, 2008 at 11:49 pm I am currently go to San Ramon for the Super Sport gym there because of how crappy the current one in Pleasanton is. The dues are $88 without any discounts which can be negotiated down. I am paying $44 a month w.o a contract and I didn't have to pay an initiation fee. Also comes with access to all gyms. The Super Sport is basically everything you need that Club Sport has minus the massages, tennis courts, rock climbing, and raquet ball courts. For the $44 a pay a month, I think this is a big bargain compared to Club Sport. This will really give Club Sport a run for the money.

Posted by John, a resident of Dublin, on Aug 25, 2008 at 12:02 pm I signed up at 24 in San Ramon so I could get the Super Sport membership and everything else below it. My membership gives me access to every 24 except 2 ultra sports (one in Irvine and one currently being built in New York). My pre-pay deal got me 3 years for $1250 and a renewal rate of $149 year for life ($12.50/month), plus 5, 50-minute training sessions (I ended up buying another 10 sessions when that was over with due to good results). When San Ramon renovated and had a grand re-opening in 2006, my wife got 3 years pre-pay for $949, 10 training sessions, and a yearly renewal of $29! I'm telling you, if you're thinking about signing up at a gym, go the 24 route, and DO THE PRE-PAY. I didn't like the idea of dropping over a grand for a membership on the spot, but think about it, if you get a deal like my wife did (or something close to it), when it comes time to renew for the 4th year and thereafter, you're looking at less than $2.50 a month for access to virtually any club.
As far as this new 24 goes, awesome! I go to the Pleasanton location more frequently than I do San Ramon because it is a little closer since I moved to Dublin. I assume the new 24 will be open 24 hours unlike the current Pleasanton club that has some whack weekend hours.

They recently did this in Moraga and tried screwing all existing members, until Michael Finney/7 on your side profiled it and only then did 24Hour "grandfather" existing members. I'm currently paying $19/all clubs for years and have seen abuses, class action settlements, etc. If you are an existing member, make sure your card is scanned in at least every week till then to establish an attendance record. Same thing in San Ramon few years back.
24Hour is nothing more than a supersales emporium marketing company merely attached to a healthclub. They need to change their name to "Final day fitness" in reference to their high pressure sales pitches.

Look at the fact that ClubSport has over 5,000 members and it's family membership cost $250/month. Clearly, there is demand and hopefully it will force ClubSport to lower their outrageous fees!!

Posted by Karen, a resident of Dublin, on Oct 16, 2008 at 3:35 pm Even with 24 coming to Dublin I'm hanging on to my ClubSport membership...I like the resort feel of the place and the staff is really attentive, especially in KidsWorld. I'm sure ClubSport will lose some members due to pricing but I'd rather have the value of what's included at ClubSport.

Posted by HHR, a resident of the Another Pleasanton neighborhood neighborhood, on Aug 30, 2010 at 2:03 pm I was told by a Pleasanton 24Hr employee that they have just signed a 5 year lease on the present location, so my understanding is that there will be 2 locations in Pleasanton. The existing one on West Las Positas, and the new one which will have all the whistles and bells, and will cost more.

Posted by resident, a resident of Dublin, on Dec 16, 2010 at 11:09 am I just worked out at the new Super Club and it is huge and beautiful. Since I have worked out at the Pleasanton location this year, they grandfathered my membership to this location, so no additional fees. yay :)
