California first state to ban trans fat
Bill signed by governor means no trans fat in restaurants by 2010, bakeries by 2011

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill Friday that made California the first state in the nation to ban trans fat in all restaurants by 2010 and bakeries by 2011.

The artificial fat is typically most appealing to bakers because the added hydrogen atoms extend shelf life, but it is also linked to coronary heart disease, strokes and other health problems, according to Schwarzenegger's office.

"California is a leader in promoting health and nutrition, and I am pleased to continue that tradition...'' Schwarzenegger said in a statement.

California Restaurant Association spokesman Daniel Conway said most restaurants have already started to phase out trans fat voluntarily, so it should not be hard to achieve. However the effects on the bottom line might make it a rocky road to 2010.

I think there will be cost involved in terms of finding a substitute. There will be a lot of cooking and a lot of trial and error,'' he said.

In 2006, the New York City Board of Supervisors approved a trans fat ban and the Philadelphia City Council followed in 2007.

Back in 2003, the town of Tiburon voluntarily became a trans-fat-free community, cutting it out of all 18 restaurants.

According to Schwarzenegger's office, all eateries, from fast-food places and cafes to corporate restaurants, will be affected.

Hello Choice, Cholo wants to know if you are some kind of kook?

In Livermore, we don't waste much time with a person like you.

Have a nice day.

Looks like one more step towards the Nanny State. I am so glad that soon I will not have to think for myself as my government handlers will let me know what I think.
