Jim Wolfe has a clock in his office that counts down the days, hours and minutes to retirement. That time will be running out soon as the city's director of parks and community services will hang it up in December.

The search for a replacement has already begun. The city has hired executive search team Peckham and McKenney to solicit and interview applicants. A job listing was posted on the National Recreation and Park Association's website last Friday with a filing deadline of Aug. 15.

Wolfe has been parks director since 1998, coming from Manhattan Beach in Southern California. He plans to move to the Central Coast.

The parks director oversees 40 municipal parks and more than 50 miles of hiking and biking trails. There are also four golf courses in the area, including the city's municipal course that opened in 2005, Callippe Preserve. The city is advertising the position at a salary of $153, 456.

Peckham and McKenney has conducted executive searches on a number of city positions in the Bay Area. Recently, the firm was hired by the city of Tracy to find a parks and community services director.

While his last day on the job isn't set in stone, Wolfe said he expects it to be Dec. 30.

Congrats to Jim on retirement. What an important role to fill here in Pleasanton. There were 2 main reasons we moved to Pleasanton: 1) The schools and 2) The Parks and Rec department that keeps our city looking so great and provides an avenue to for the community to participate via recreation events. My hope is that this is a team effort and not just limited to Mr. Wolfe meaning a new director will simply keep the good times rolling.

Jim will leave some very big shoes to fill. He's done a great job for Pleasanton, and our children and grandchildren will be enjoying his efforts for years to come. Just take a look at Val Vista Park, or Callippe Preserve, and just wait for the new Alviso Adobe Park and the Bernal Park, and you'll see the results of Jim's hard work. Thanks Jim, for all of your counsel and advice, and for making it all so much fun. The Parks and Recreation Commission appreciates the great things you've done here, and wishes you a happy retirement.
