| A new parking structure offering some relief to BART riders scanning lots for open spaces on workdays opened Saturday.
The structure, built on the Dublin side of the Dublin/Pleasanton station, features 1,500 parking spaces. The seven-story building was constructed for $42 million. A ceremony dedicating it was held Friday morning, featuring Supervisor Scott Haggerty, Dublin Mayor Janet Lockhart, Sen. Ellen Corbett, Assemblyman Guy Houston and BART officials.
The structure was to open a couple of months earlier, but Haggerty, in response to complaints from residents, requested that it be painted to give it a more attractive appearance. The structure is now painted in gold and teal accents.
A surface parking lot adjacent to the new structure and AvalonBay Communities townhomes will still be available to riders temporarily until the homebuilder embarks on its plans for housing and retail on the land, Haggerty said.
The parking structure is the cornerstone of the Dublin Transit Center, a transit-oriented development that will be a pedestrian-friendly village with 1,800 high-density housing units, 2 million square feet of commercial office and retail space and a park. The structure was the result of a partnership between BART, the city of Dublin, the Alameda County Surplus Property Authority and AvalonBay.
The design of the garage is such that it will be able to expand to accommodate an additional 500 spaces in the future. --Janet Pelletier Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.

Posted by Joe, a member of the Fairlands Elementary School community, on May 25, 2008 at 6:08 pm I'm a bit confused, and maybe someone in the know can clarify this for me: the new parking structure boasts 1,500 parking spots. In the short term, this is in addition to the current surface parking at the station. Once construction begins on the new condos/apartments, though, these surface spots will disappear. In addition, I had read that the condos/apartments will be given designated spots within the new parking garage. Once this happens, what is the total number of spots available for BART riders?
In other words, will the new parking garage result in a NET gain or a NET loss of parking spaces for BART riders once the condos/apartments are built? Who would have this information?

Seems to me an important distinction: will there be more or will there be fewer spaces for BART riders at the Dublin/Pleasanton station, after the surface parking is eaten up by the new condo/apartment expansion?
Someone? Anyone?

A good question. I would like to know the answer also. These are the people you should ask, Supervisor Scott Haggerty, Dublin Mayor Janet Lockhart, Sen. Ellen Corbett, Assemblyman Guy Houston and BART officials, then let us know.

Posted by Joe, a member of the Fairlands Elementary School community, on May 28, 2008 at 10:20 am Ok, I did find a relevant quote on the ABC7 News website:
'The exposed surface parking area near the station will be redeveloped for housing units, according to BART officials.
"The garage replaces nearby surface parking on a one-to-one basis," said BART Board President Gail Murray in a prepared statement. "The surface parking lots will be redeveloped with townhouses, condominiums and convenient shopping within walking distance of the station and a major bus hub." '
So there is the answer, I believe, and it's not a very pretty one. While all the officials are preening for the press and touting the increase in parking spaces with the opening of the new parking garage, it's a shell game, a sham. The increase in parking spaces is a TEMPORARY situation, so folks, don't get too cozy to the idea and praise the officials too highly. It sure sounds as if those extra spots will be taken away the second that construction on the new condos/apartments breaks ground, and we'll be back in the same, *if not worse* situation because some of the spots will be given away (or leased) to the condo/apartment residents, per another article.
I will contact the officials on your list, Trish, and recommend that others do the same. Do they take us for fools?
