Student-run garage sale to benefit Kenyan girls

Bookmark and Share
High school seniors are putting on a garage sale to benefit an all-girls boarding school in Kenya. Shoppers are invited to stop by from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Pool, 7624 Olive Drive.

All the proceeds go to WISER (Women's Institute for Secondary Education and Research), a school that aims to reduce the gender inequality gap and sexual abuse in the Muhuru Bay region. It is run by Duke University.

The sale, organized by Foothill seniors Chelsea Barberio-Kitts, Michelle Horton and Rose Ali, is part of a Health and Bioscience Academy Senior Project.

"The girls of Muhuru Bay face discrimination and sexual harassment from their teachers and peers," the seniors write in a letter to potential supporters. "Only elementary school is free in Kenya, so girls are often forced to have sex with their teachers to pay their school fees. On top of that, Muhuru Bay has the highest rate of HIV/AIDS in all of Kenya. The drop out rate in this region is out of control because of early pregnancies, forced marriages, etc. Since girls' education is not a priority in Kenya, not a single girl has gone on to college from Muhuru Bay in the past 25 years. WISER is being created to give these girls a chance for a future."
