| Two weekend accidents have left one dead and three critically injured.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, the driver of a Ford Mustang traveling southbound on Foothill Road near Highland Oaks Drive careened out of control and collided head-on with a Mercedes SUV going northbound, according to police.
The front seat passenger, a 19-year-old woman, died at the scene. She was later identifed as Laurel Williams of Pleasanton. The driver of the Mustang, also a 19-year-old woman, was ejected out of the passenger side window, according to Sgt. Michael Collins. She sustained extensive head trauma and is listed in critical condition at Eden Medical Center. She is also from Pleasanton.
The driver of the Mercedes, a 70-year-old woman from Pleasanton, sustained moderate to serious injuries and was also transported to Eden Medical Center, where she remains under observation, Collins said.
Collins said police are investigating the possibility of alcohol being a factor in the accident. Any witnesses to the accident are asked to call lead investigator Officer Rober Leong at 931-5100, referring to Case No. 07-40754.
In a different incident, police arrested a 53-year-old man suspected of drunk driving Saturday evening in Pleasanton after he caused a two-vehicle crash that left a 9-year-old girl in critical condition, police said.
Pleasanton resident Robert Brian Monaghan was driving eastbound on Owens Drive near Rosewood Drive with his 4-year-old son shortly after 6 p.m. when Monaghan rear-ended a vehicle with a family of four inside, according to Sgt. Kris Phelps.
The vehicle that was struck careened into the center divide, Phelps said.
A 9-year-old girl inside the smashed vehicle suffered multiple head injuries and was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Oakland, where she was listed in critical condition, according to police.
The girl's father was transported to Eden Medical Center, where he was treated and later released, Phelps said.
Monaghan was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and child endangerment, and booked into Santa Rita Jail, according to officials. Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.
