Pleasanton Middle School eighth graders Matt Hardwick and Taylor denBroeder were surprised Friday with an honorable mention award for their C-SPAN StudentCam 2009 video submission.

Representatives from C-SPAN, Comcast and Rep. Jerry McNerney's office were in attendance to recognize their work in reporting on how the local economy is affecting education.

The students' video, as well as those from other winners, is available on the C-SPAN StudentCam site.

The StudentCam competition has students create a short video documentary that explored an issue of national significance that they believe is in need of urgent attention from the new president of the United States. C-SPAN received 921 submissions and selected 75 of them to win.

Representatives from C-SPAN arrived on campus in the large Civics Bus. The bus, equipped with TV production units, is part of a 15-year program to bring media and public affairs issues to schools.
