Dublin resident and Army Staff Sgt. Sean D. Diamond was killed Sunday after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near his vehicle in As Salam, Iraq, it was announced today.
Diamond, 41, was assigned to the 610th Engineer Support Company, 14th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade, U.S. Army, based in Fort Lewis, Wash.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issued the following statement: "Maria and I are deeply saddened by the loss of Staff Sergeant Sean Diamond. He was a brave soldier who sacrificed his life while defending our nation's freedom and his service and loyalty to our country will not be forgotten. On behalf of all Californians, we offer our sincere condolences to Sean's family, friends and fellow soldiers during this difficult time."
Diamond began his military service Sept. 2, 1987, and rejoined the Army in 2000 after a short break, according to the Fort Lewis public affairs
office.
He earned several awards and decorations during his career, including the Bronze Star Medal, Army Achievement Medal and Presidential Unit
Citation Award.
Diamond is survived by his wife and children and his mother.
