The Centerpointe Christian Preschool in Pleasanton reopened today after it was closed last Friday to allow for program review and teacher training.

This followed an investigation of an incident involving a teacher who bound a 2-year-old with masking tape.

The preschool on the campus of Centerpointe Presbyterian Church at Busch Road and Valley Avenue in Pleasanton held special training sessions for teachers and also met with parents of children enrolled in the school.

Investigators from the Pleasanton Police Department have interviewed the preschool's staff.

Pleasanton Police Sgt. Kurt Schlehuber said yesterday that police submitted its completed investigation to the Alameda County District Attorney's office for review. That office has taken the case under submission to determine if criminal charges are appropriate based upon the facts of the case.

Until October, the preschool had a spotless record. Then, in the period of five months, the school received eight citations from the state Department of Social Services, which oversees preschools and daycare centers.

The most recent incident was also the most serious violation to date after a picture of a 2-year-old girl with her wrists and ankles bound with masking tape was shown by former teacher Angela Calcagno to the girl's mother.

The picture was taken by Calcagno, and apparently shown to the child's mother -- another teacher --at a social gathering. It's unknown when the photo was taken.

It was nap time and according to the complainant, the child would not take her nap. When the child continued to refuse a nap, the teacher tied up the child's ankles with masking tape, an investigator's report said.

A police report was filed March 4, and Centerpointe reported the incident to licensing on March 5.

In a separate letter, dated March 11, the preschool teacher who bound the child was declared a threat by DSS.

Calcagno, who quit Centerpointe Christian Preschool in February, was ordered by the state not to have any contact with clients or to be "physically present" at the school.
