The Pleasanton school board will hear an update tonight on state funding following last week's release of Gov. Jerry Brown's budget proposal.

Brown's budget includes an increase of $2.7 billion for the 2013-14 school year. It also increases funding for schools in low-income areas based on the number of free or reduce-priced lunches they serve and districts with a large number of English-language learners

Beyond that, the budget proposal includes $1.8 billion to repay districts for borrowing they had to do due to deferred payments.

The district will also hear the latest update to the California Healthy Kids Survey, which asks students about drug, alcohol and tobacco use, sexual activity, and whether schools are safe.

The board will also hear a report on school safety in the wake of recent school shootings; Superintendent Parvin Ahmadi and Police Chief Dave Spiller will also hold a public discussion about school safety at Hart Middle School from 6-7:30 p.m.Wednesday night.

Tonight's meeting will also include a discussion about summer school -- now largely for makeup courses after recent cuts to the program -- and the hiring of a summer school coordinator at a cost of $8,000.
