Air Quality district urges residents to avoid fireplace fires--on Christmas Day!
Santa Claus probably agrees

Bookmark and Share
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is asking Bay Area residents to skip the fire in the fireplace on Christmas Day to keep neighborhood air quality healthy on this holiday.

Burning wood is not illegal on Christmas, but officials are asking residents to observe a voluntary ban.

"The break in the blustery weather will cause smoke pollution to build on Christmas morning," said Jack Broadbent, the district's executive officer. "We are asking the public to voluntarily not burn on Christmas to help reduce pollution levels and avoid the need to call a Winter Spare the Air Alert."

The holidays are typically periods of high wood smoke pollution because so many people light a fire for Christmas, according to the district.

Wood smoke contains pollutants such as soot and carbon monoxide and dioxin, and can cause breathing difficulties for many people.

The public should check before they burn throughout the winter Spare the Air season, from Nov. 1 to Feb. 28th. Check online at www.baaqmd.gov or www.sparetheair.org.

Good thing I bought extra firewood yesterday. It's supposed to rain on Christmas Day, so I'm not sure who these bureaucrats think they are fooling. It couldn't be that they like to remind us all how they can attempt to control our behavior and insert themselves into the our enjoyment of the biggest holiday of the year......

In spite of their efforts, we'll enjoy a Merry Christmas beside the fire.....Merry Christmas all!

This year we've named our "Yule Log" -- Jack Broadbent -- in honor of the idiot from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

Merry Christmas everyone, including you namby pambies who are bothered by soot, carbon monoxide, and dioxin. Get a mask! Let's not spoil the holiest day of the year with your petty breathing concerns. Pollutants and profits (yule log producers and sellers) are as American as assault weapons. Wishing you all a prosperous holiday season!

lib/cap, your worthless sarcasm is growing tedious. But, to humor you, when I light up a roaring fire in my fireplace tonight, I'll walk around the block a few times to see if any ambulances show up to cart off my sensitive neighbors who can tolerate second hand pot smoke, but can't stand the scent of oakwood warming our home.

As an asthma sufferer, I see no reason for others to suffer on this special evening. I do not intend to walk the neighborhood this evening checking my lung capacity. Enjoy. Burn an extra log for me. Duraflames are what we use in our home. Just make sure to clean your chimney regularly. Oh, and Merry Christmas!

Can't wait to light the fire! The crackle of the wood as it releases its air polluting carbon creates a very festive atmosphere.....too many regulations....if you have wood burn it!
