Despite warm weather, the winter 'Spare the Air' season is now in effect
Fines start at $100, keep rising for violators

| Despite the warm weather expected for much of the week, the four-month Winter Spare the Air season has started, making it illegal to burn wood on days when an alert is called. Bay Area Air Quality Management District representatives said winter Spare the Air alerts are issued when dry, stagnant weather conditions trap pollution close to the ground and air district officials deem it unhealthy. During the last winter season ending in February, the air district issued a record 15 alerts. Starting this season, first-time violators will be encouraged to take a wood smoke awareness course to learn about the health impacts of the pollution. The meatball that lives behind us has his wood burning stove going every damn night, and day and night on weekends. It just makes it very difficult for those that have respiratory issues. With the EPA banning any number of things they have no business banning, one wonders why they don't ban wood burning in cities. Burning wood makes no sense economically, and it is a a major air pollutant.

Posted by burn this...., a resident of the Another Pleasanton neighborhood neighborhood, on Nov 7, 2012 at 9:04 am I wonder if the ban applies to 'medicinal' pot smoking, as well. you know, we've got to all bend over backwards for those sensitive, weak people who have to have their special needs catered to be everyone around them. All the while, they are driving around in vehicles that contribute more to air pollution than any modern wood stove. That doesn't make them hypocrites, right? After all, it's not like they could limit their driving, like homeowners have been asked to do with their home heating methods.....
