A new book club is meeting at the Pleasanton library tonight to discuss "The Price of Privilege" by Dr. Madelyn Levine, a book that explores whether teens from affluent families have more problems than expected.
The book club is an offshoot of the Amador Valley High School's Challenge Success Team that was formed to help students deal with stress and to discuss how to define success, said Sherie MacGregor, who is a parent on the team along with Tina Nomura.
"It is comprised of a team of administrators, counselors, teachers, parents and, most importantly, students," MacGregor said.
Its vision statement is: "We seek to establish an environment of dynamic relationships within our community in order to support our students on their journey to define their own success."
They are reaching out to introduce the group to parents, club teams, community groups, police teams that help teens, high school sports coaches, club coaches, school administrators, marching band families, counseling services, youth ministers, School Board members, Pleasanton youth services, Chamber of Commerce, and City Council members.
To help do this, everyone is invited to the Challenge Success Book Club and community forum at 7 p.m. tonight in the Pleasanton library, whether or not they have teens at Amador and whether or not they have read Levine's book.
"This will be more of an introduction to the group and we're hoping that it turns into a community forum to seek ways to listen and help our teens navigate through their high school years," MacGregor said. "It's going to be ongoing at the library every other month.
Books to be discussed in the future are:
7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4: "Doing School: How we are Creating a Generation of Stressed Out, Materialistic and Miseducated Students," by Dr. Denise Pope
7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27: "The Homework Myth," by Alfie Kohn
All books will be available for check out at the Pleasanton Public Library and for purchase at Towne Center Books, 555 Main St. Mention the Challenge Success Book Club to receive a 15% discount.
