Police out in force for final day of Labor Day weekend
State, county, local police on 'high alert' for irresponsible drivers
|
Officers from the Dublin, Castro Valley, Hayward and Oakland area commands of the California Highway Patrol are on high alert for impaired, reckless and irresponsible drivers today as motorists crowd the highways on the last day of the Labor Day weekend.
Black-and-white cruisers have been a prominent, highly-visible part of traffic on the freeways since last Friday night as stepped-up patrols continue through Monday.
Law enforcement officials from all over Alameda County urge the driving public to phone in any dangerous drivers by dialing 911 on their cell phones, said Lt. Ava Garavatti of the Livermore police, Avoid the 21 coordinator.
"We take those calls very seriously," she said. "We'll dispatch an officer out to pull the car over. We appreciate all the help we can get in getting them off the road."
Avoid the 21 ends its special mobilization on Monday at midnight. The California Office of Traffic Safety funds the extra enforcement through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.--Jeb Bing Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.
