Pleasanton police arrested a 32-year-old transient who was allegedly armed with a knife and threatened to stab two teens Tuesday afternoon.

Police Sergeant Sgt. Larry Cox reported that officers responded to a all for help after a man attempted to stab two 16-year-olds with a knife in the area of the 3800 block of Vineyard Avenue around 3:15 p.m.

Cox said the teens shielded themselves with their skateboards and were able to flee unharmed.

Police located the man nearby, who matched the description provided by the victims. He was identified as Nathan Kavanaugh of Pleasanton. A knife was found in Kavanaugh’s car near the scene, Cox said.

Kavanaugh was arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on suspicion of two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

  1. Were these two youths provided an open-carry firearm and trained in its use, this would have been a nonissue. Handguns fend off knife attacks better than skateboards.

  2. Did the man attempt to rob the kids …or is he mentally ill ? He was just hauled off to jail and soon to be released …… We need more details here Please!!! I live in this neighborhood and I don’t have a skateboard in my purse !!!!!
I hope he gets the proper help if he is indeed mentally ill. This could have been really ugly for those kids.

  3. 16 yr. old skateboarders don’t usually scoot around with a gun on their hip.

They found a way to protect themselves and they got away unharmed…that’s the GOOD NEWS!

They are alive because they thought clearly in a crisis and that saved their lives. Nothing like teens who defended themselves and nobody was injured/killed.

    VIVA THE 2 SKATEBOARDERS! VIVA!

There’s a lesson here for teens and their parents. LONG LIVE TEENS!

  4. I went to school with Nate and he’s been getting in trouble forever. He could use some help, but people do what they want. Those kids were probably antagonizing him and he wanted to scare ’em off. I digress, 2>1, cops’ll believe the two every time.

  5. I want to hear Nathan Kavanaugh’s side of the story about those two boys with their skateboards. If Nathan K. Is not mentally ill then those boys bullied him .. There is more to this story I’m sure. Too,bad Nathan is taking the entire rap.
I was unjustly arrested once for 4 days and put in Santa Rita jail in the womens section. Not fun when you are innocent and no officals care much to get to the bottom of things. I was lucky to have friends who knew my character and helped get me out . It was an expensive ordeal that could have been avoided had the police been more proactive in listening to,what I had to say..
I think Nathan was provoked sorry. Parents of the skateboarders ….do your homework too.

  6. Lots of folks, teens and adults, antagonize others and it DOES NOT lead to much.

Perhaps the details are not available at this time?

    patience…i rest my case…

ps don’t be surprised if several plutonians state that the adult should have been shot, hanged, and run over by a steam roller…

  7. Yes a knife was found in Nathan’s car….. Nathan is under suspicion that he pulled the knife on the kids. Nathan goes to Santa Rita jail….skateboard kids go home to their mommy and daddy and have a nice lunch. THEY HIT NATHAN WITH THEIR SKATEBOARDS. Why should I believe these skateboard kids that they didn’t do anything?

You don’t just pull a knife on two kids for no reason….Skateboard kids provoked Nathan. Why are they having lunch at home and Nathan is having lunch in his cell?? Something stinks badly here!
The police should have hauled ALL OF THEM TO JAIL and not made any assumptions that Nathan is the guilty one. We have judges to get to the bottom of things. They all instigated the incident.

  8. If those two teens were armed with guns, we’d probably have a dead transient on our hands. Why don’t we give everyone a gun (or two or three!) when they are born? That way everyone is packing heat at all times and whenever we have an argument with someone we can all just draw our weapons and everything will be fine

  9. What you are saying Tom is very profound. It is true that some may die, but longterm that will help everyone. And because people don’t like to die, they’ll respect the open carry decisions of their fellow citizens.

  10. FM: Where does it say the kids hit the Kavanaugh with their skateboards? “Cox said the teens shielded themselves with their skateboards…” As in held them up to fend off a knife. It’s irresponsible to jump to the conclusion based on no facts that these kids were bad because they are kids. Do the math. If the kids instigated it as your conspiracy theory claims, it’s unlikely they would be calling the cops to report it. It’s more likely that Mr. Kavanaugh made a bad choice. Let’s just hope he can get the help he needs.

  11. Fannie, regardless of what may have been said, there’s no excuse for pulling a knife. Even you, after your run in with the police, should know this. Why give someone a reason to escalate?
