The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has issued a Spare the Air alert for today with Pleasanton temperatures to near the triple-digit level with low winds.

The alert, the sixth issued during the summer season and the first since June 9, is prompted by high levels of ozone pollution expected in the Bay Area on Friday, air district officials said.

Temperatures could reach as high as 104 degrees in the East Bay on Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

The air district encourages Bay Area residents to drive less, particularly on Spare the Air days, since heat, low wind and vehicle exhaust can combine to cause breathing problems, particularly for the young, seniors and those with respiratory or heart conditions.

“Using alternative commutes instead of driving alone to work or school not only helps to reduce air pollution and traffic congestion, it can also save money and reduce stress,” air district executive officer Jack Broadbent said in a statement.

In the East Bay, temperatures will soar to the upper 80s and get toasty deeper inland with forecasts of 100 degrees or higher in Pleasanton and a scorching 104 degrees in other inland cities, including Tracy.

Inland temperatures will fall to the mid- to upper-90s over the weekend.

“Although still warm, it will drop,” National Weather Service forecaster Bob Benjamin said.

The hot days are not record-breaking, but getting close, he added.

Livermore would have to get to 111 degrees to set a new record for the date. San Jose, which is expected to reach a high of 96 Friday, will come close to its 99-degree record.

  1. It would also really be great if the moron that lives behind us would not be burning wood in his fireplace. Yep, the moron actually burns wood in his fireplace on hot summer nights. Then his neighbors are forced to shut their windows and endure the heat, or run their air conditioners, unless they want a house full of smoke. The enviro-Nazis should go after the dude, but often the enviro-Nazis are the worst wood-burning offenders.
