It didn’t take long for State Senator Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord) to throw his hat in the ring for a bid to replace retiring Congressman George Miller.

Miller announced Monday that he decided to retire from office after serving 40 years in Congress. By early afternoon, DeSaulnier announced he’ll run for Miller’s 11th district congressional seat, which is up for election next year.

In announcing the election bid, DeSaulnier promised to continue the work done by the man he hopes to replace, whom he said he’d worked with at various levels of government for 20 years. DeSaulnier called Miller one of California’s “strongest champions of working people and the middle class.”

“I’ve always greatly admired Rep. Miller’s tireless work ethic, his dedication to the residents of his district, along with his deep devotion and perseverance in fighting for the progressive values and issues that matter most to Californians,” DeSaulnier said. “Rep. Miller will be missed, but his legacy of working to create good jobs, increase access to healthcare, improve our schools, and help California flourish in a global economy, will live on forever.”

DeSaulnier’s state senate district covers about 70% of Miller’s, so he has some name recognition as he begins his campaign.

He said he’s ready to hit the ground running, with some specific issues already on his agenda.

“I’m running for Congress to help bring an end to the brinkmanship and gridlock in Washington,” DeSaulnier said, “so that we can move forward with President Obama’s agenda of creating more good paying jobs, growing our middle class, investing in our infrastructure, increasing access to healthcare, advancing the use of renewable and homegrown energy, enhancing our education systems, and making the United States a leader in innovation around the globe.”

Before serving in the State Senate’s 7th district, DeSaulnier represented California’s 11th State Assembly district. He also served as a Contra Costa County supervisor and member of Concord City Council.

  1. DeSaulnier is just the man we do not need. Haven’t we learned that Obama’s agenda is not good for the country, especially if you get sick?

  2. What a joy that George Miller will finally be out of Congress. He is an uber left wing loon. Not only does if have an outstanding track record of actions detrimental to the well-being of this country, but he was key in getting the chief wacko Nancy Pelosi elected as Speaker of the House, and getting our famously wacko Senator Barbara Boxer elected. Miller has be at the center of loonism in Washington, sharing a townhouse with Sen. Chuck Schumer and Sen. Dick Durbin — talk about The Three Stooges of Loonism.

The bad news is that Miller will undoubtedly be replace by another left wing loon, perhaps someone even loonier that Miller, that will be totally controlled by senile Queen Pelosi. We clearly saw this happen when Eric Swalwell replaced the completely over-the-top Loon, Fortney Stark. Swalwell is like a talking head for Queen Pelosi.

  3. It is hard to be “respectful” in posting a response to these “loonism” remarks, since they demonstrate the kind of damaging disrespect that plagues our politics; but I will simply express my support for the President’s agenda –good jobs, access to healthcare for all, quality education, economic vitality, support for the disadvantaged — and for Mr. DeSaulnier’s intent to advance that agenda. Elections have consequences and I take this one seriously.

  4. Thanks DRS, Miller was just great ! De Saulnier has big shoes to fill. Thanks to Dems for keeping government open. We will vote for him.

  5. No, he did not become smarter — he became loonier. Probably because the Tri-Valley, that used to be heavily Republican, got overrun by left wing loons. Just like Fortney Stark — he used to be a Republican and then morphed over the years to the looniest of loons, to the point of being the laughing stock of the whole country. Stark was so loony that even Queen Pelosi would not let him take over leadership of the House Ways and Means Committee.

  6. The only thing that will save this Country are conservatives…not RINOS, certainly not Democrats.

Unfortunately this is an uphill battle…and I believe America is lost to the socialist/marxist/communist Democrat party. They are more diabolical and successful in their determination to destroy this country, while conservatives have been too polite, too respectful, too busy with taking care of their family and focusing on their job. Democrats will rule this country and take it down to a third-world status, ruled by many dictators to come after Obama. Next in line is the hapless but politically powerful Hillary.

Our Country is lost…and I fear for our children who are the real victims.

  7. Conserv hits the nail right on the head. The lib loons are destroying this country. Our country and its citizens need to be more like China. Less regulation, less democratic loon activism, less global warming hysteria, where people take care of their family and focus on their job. Because thats whats important. We need to emeulate China unless we plummit further into 3rd world obscrurity.

  8. Ha-ha-ha, Libertarian, scaring us with a link to so-called pollution in China. I’d much rather inhale a little extra smog than have to cow-tow to union thugs in America where BART workers make upward of $70 grand a year. Let the Chinese transportation workers try to strike, and the no nonsense Chinese government will strike back before the workers know what hit them. America needs to be a right to work nation like China is. No unions means freedom for everyone. It’s a sad day in America when the Chinese people have more freedom than Americans. All because of unions.
