Walmart could get the final OK it’s been waiting for at tonight’s Pleasanton City Council meeting when a vote will be taken on the retailer’s bid to open one of its Neighborhood Markets at the site of the long-vacant Nob Hill supermarket on Santa Rita Road.

Mayor Jennifer Hosterman will re-open the council’s discussion on an appeal by Councilman Matt Sullivan to reverse the council’s earlier decision to approve a zoning administrator’s recommendation to allow the Walmart store.

That discussion by the council, which followed a three-hour-long public meeting at the Firehouse Arts Center May 7, was stopped after Sullivan used a procedural rule that allows any member of the council to postpone a vote until the next regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Sullivan waited until the end of the public meeting to make his bid.

With Sullivan’s procedural opportunities to delay a vote apparently used up, and the public hearing closed, Hosterman plans to call for a vote near the start of tonight’s meeting. The mayor and the three others on the council have already indicated that they will support Walmart in its application to open the new market.

In reviewing Walmart’s application, the city zoning administrator found that the proposed Neighborhood Market will have the same “footprint” of the Nob Hill store, which gained approval to operate a full service supermarket in 1982. Except for a name change and the addition of a pharmacy, the Walmart market will meet all of the requirements of the 1982 planned unit development approval, which goes with the property.

Tonight’s council meeting, which will be broadcast live on Community Television station Channel 29, is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at 200 Old Bernal Ave.

  1. If Matt Sullivan pulls anymore of his procedural highjinks tonight, an investigation should immediately be launched to see if he is taking bribes from the union(s).

    Pleasantonians should show up at the City Council meeting in force to show the unions that we are not going to put up with union bullying in Pleasanton.

    As we read about the criminal activity that the SEIU has been involved in recently (i.e. paying for criminal activities), it raises more suspicions about what criminal activity the unions may be involved in regarding this Walmart application.

    Criminal activities by a union should certainly be investigated. Do you have a link to information regarding these allegations of criminal activity. Please provide the link if you have it.

  10. City council by 4-1 vote denied Sullivan’s appeal. Thank goodness for common sense, rule of law, and free market. Sullivan should make his own choice not to shop at WalMart. But, market should decide what stores remain open & which close.

  12. Mr Sullivan is concerned that Walmart will affect the sales at Luckys and Safeway. I’m sure it will.
    Well then, Luckys and Safeway better lower their prices!
    I was glad to hear the Mayors comments about a lawsuit if this was denied. She was correct that the last lawsuit the city went through cost a LOT of money. And it would have happened again.
    I am looking forward to the new market.
    My bet is it will be a great success and definitely a good addition to that center.

  13. Yes, this is a great day for all Peasantonians who support Walmart labor practices, bribery of foreign and domestic politicians, and exploitation of child labor. Drop your prices Safeway and Luckys; and if you don’t, well then you should consider busting up your unions and employing more child laborers.

    This is also a great day for people like me who buy corndogs and pickled eggs in bulk.
