The third annual Pleasanton Double Racing Festival is set for this Sunday (Dec. 21).

The Double Racing Festival is a Christmas-themed event for all ages, with the Pleasanton Partnerships in Education (PPIE) Foundation listed as the race beneficiary.

Double Racing is a two-stage running challenge in which participants run the longer stretch of the race first and then experience a recovery period when they can ride stationary bikes, stretch, refuel or rehydrate.

After the break, runners complete the second, shorter leg of the race. The times from each portion of the race are combined for scoring, event organizers said.

The Pleasanton festival offers three distance options for various fitness levels, including a 15K double (10K then 5K), 8K double (5K then 3K) and the 1.5 mile Kids’ Cup double (1 mile then half-mile). Live music, food and a “Santa Runner” contest will also occur during the festival.
