'Spare the Air' day to remain in effect today

Violators can face fines of up to $500

Another Winter Spare the Air Day has been called again for today, prohibiting all wood burning in the Bay Area for another 24-hour period, according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

The air alert is in effect today and will continue Tuesday for the seventh day this season, air officials said.

During a prolonged cold snap with temperatures dropping into the 30s and below, air pollution is expected to reach unhealthy levels again on Tuesday.

During a Spare the Air Day during the winter, it is prohibited to use fireplaces, woodstoves, pellet stoves, outdoor fire pits or any other wood-burning device. Wood burning is only legal in homes where woodstoves or fireplaces are the only heat source.

Violators could face fines of up to $500.

To file a complaint or to find out more about the alert, residents can visit the district's website at or call (877) 4-NO-BURN.

The Winter Spare the Air season runs until Feb. 28.

Wood burning is a god given right and no republican Californian government can take it away from me. Jerry Brown and his conservative smoke squad be damned! I just lit a fire .....come and get me!

You might want to open the damper on your fireplace. Your post sounds like smoke may be intruding into your living space and impacting the amount of oxygen reaching your brain.

We need less wood burning for our health. More clean air please. Go to gas or follow the rules. Thanks.

'WE' have been burning wood for centuries and will continue to do so to heat our homes. If you want to pay to install a gas fireplace for me, great, otherwise hold your breath.

So, we are only allowed to have fires when it's warm out? That's like 4 or 5 days in the last week!

Remember you can report wood burners who don't obey the rules and they can go to wood burning schools and learn harmful effects in city areas. Best they move to a cave and build wood fireplaces to heat their homes.

'nuts' no one will be moving or attending one of your re-education/labor camps for people who enjoy a cozy fire on a cold evening. However, Las Positas college offers a class you and your ilk should attend: it's a psychology course aimed at understanding narcisitic, condescending govt bureaucrats and their wannabe compatriots who feel they should control every aspect of citizens private lives. You can get extra credit in the course if you can explain why you are in a position to tell other people how to live and what to do and not do. Extra, extra credit if you can justify ratting out your neighbors and later question why they've all turned on you.
Understanding your problem is the first step towards a cure...until then, don't forget to look over your shoulder. I suspect your neighbors know where to find you......

All those for clean air, call 800-334-ODOR, for those who don't follow the rules on spare the air day. Support a healthy habit. Some above need an education on why wood smoke is harmful for us to breathe. I enjoy the fireplace…but its clean gas, not wood.. helping the neighborhood !

If you really want to make the neighborhood a better place to live - relocate to Berkeley.

Well said, Arroyo. ' Right wing nuts' must be an NSA plant. Who else would gather information about the public and turn it over to another govt agency. It's sad what has become of our liberal, elitist society.
