A con artist claiming to be the victim’s grandson swindled a woman out of $1,900 last week, police reports said.

The man said he was calling from Colombia, South America, and, posing as the victim’s grandson, said he’d been in an accident that had broken his nose, damaged a vehicle and sent a friend to the hospital. The woman, who lives in the 1000 block of Via di Salerno, wired the $1,900 in her grandson’s name via Western Union. The incident took place between 10:20 a.m. June 7 and 2 p.m. June 8, but was reported June 9.

A wire transfer can be picked up anywhere with a code word arranged in advance between the sender and recipient. Police have been warning about a scam that targets the elderly with claims of relatives hospitalized or in emergency situations who need cash immediately.

In other police reports:

* No one was injured when a trash can was set on fire June 10 near Zorn’s Restaurant in the 3000 block of Hopyard Road. Two witnesses reported a barely coherent homeless man told them of a fire in the parking lot. They were then told by juveniles that the man was near the can just before the fire started. The man was not identified.

* Three sets of tires were slashed overnight June 7. Three vehicles parked at Stoneridge Mall apartments in the 6200 block of Stoneridge Mall Road reported tires slashed, between 9:50 and 10:30 a.m. June 8. It’s at least the fourth set of slashed tires in the last few months; several juveniles were arrested in one of the earlier cases.

* Brandon Troy Stanberry, 20, of Dublin was arrested at about 11 p.m. June 7 for possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell. Stanberry was taken into custody at 10:25 p.m. in the 3700 block of Hopyard Road after an officer recognized him at 7-Eleven. A search turned up six painkiller pills and $17 cash.

* Rebecca Kathleen Anderson, 44, of Pleasanton was arrested at 8:37 p.m. June 6 on a Pleasanton felony warrant in an elder abuse case involving the theft of about $491.

* Roxanna Kay Eberhard, 41, of Pleasanton arrested at about 3:45 a.m. June 7 for identity theft. Mail in another person’s name was found on the passenger seat of her car after a traffic stop at the intersection of Black Avenue and Santa Rita Road at 3:03 a.m.

* Michael Robert Ornelas, 20, of Pleasanton was arrested June 12 in the 1000 block of Stoneridge Mall Road at about 3:49 p.m. for auto theft and petty theft. Police say he took a car that had been owned by his family, removed a $300 stereo and returned the car to where it was parked.

* A residential burglary took place in the 4400 block of Holland Drive, but it’s unknown at this time exactly what was stolen. The door to the laundry room at the rear of the home was pried open, as was a walk-in closet of the bedroom of the home, which had been dead-bolted. A list is being compiled; the report was filed at 8:42 p.m. June 10.

Under the law, those arrested are considered innocent until convicted.

  1. What is wrong with todays society!!!! Crime gets worse daily and it doesn’t really have anything to do with bart(ok maybe a little). To many people out of work so they have to steal from other people. VERY WRONG!!!! I’m out of work and I don’t steal from people.

  2. What funny is Pleasanton citizens think outside forces come here and commit crime when in fact most is committed by Ptown citizens. What we need a bigger Police force. Where is Nelson Fialo on this issue? As the city manager the buck stops with him…step up Nelson ! One less park, art gallery or human resource assistant and more cops!

  3. Truth, lets see some statistics from a reputable source to back up your claim about crime in OUR town. Where is it you said you commute in from? Glad BART is running again? fosho

  4. Another crime committed by a Columbian illegal. And now Obama the great one wants to go against Congress and let these crooks stay in the county. Watch. ACORN will sign them all up on the registration polls, and the tirant Obama will tell Holder to look the other way as the Columbian car-tell prays upon Ptown citizens.

  5. Steven—Unfortunately, you are correct. We must fight this tyrant and do everything we can to make sure he does not get reelected. (How anyone can vote for him a second time is beyond my comprehension).

  6. It’s about time great citizens like Steven and Joe begin speaking out against the tyranny of the Obama administration. I don’t know which is worse, his accepting Columbian children into this country or the imposition of his heinous tax on tanning salons.

  7. Although I agree with Steve concerning the un-checked idiot running this nation, I wonder when he will wake up to the micro community we live in? Not every crime is committed by the big bad black man living over the hill who rides BART here to torment you Steve. Stop low crawling around your house long enough to learn a little something new..perhaps a ride a long with PPD would educate you enough to widen your perspective…on second thought I would not want to do that to one of our heroes…I could not imagine being a cop trapped inside a patrol car with you.

  8. I had the same thing happen to me a while back. Someone called to say he was my grand son and that he was in Mexico. I asked how in the #@*& did he get to mexico. The story was almost the same as this ladys. Little did they know that I would not give my oldest grand son a penny in money and told him(?) that he have to figure it out how to get home to Oregon on his own and to get a job. Of course I figured out it wasn’t my grand son, but called his father and confirmed that he was still in Oregon. These people are very skilled.

  9. “These people are very skilled”
Not really. Some people are just easily fooled. How easy would it be to confirm that the person is not your grandson. Ask him to describe you, name his cousins, give his mother’s or father’s birthday or tell about the last time you spent time together. No phone scammer will have enough personal information to get anything if you just think.
Older people can get confused. But if the Kenyan email scams didn’t work they would stop. Just get a brain before you open your wallet.

  10. Why is the flood of illegal immigrants being permitted to continue? It is swelling and swelling, and we don’t have the tax dollars to pay for their scraped knees and bloodied noses. The idiot in the White House, the worst president in American history, bar none, has now decided to let them into the country and share the same public tax-financed swimming pools that my kids swim in. When are we going to reclaim all that was great with this original American nation of ours? Answer my question!

  11. Arnold,

I’ll be happy to answer. You have it wrong. There is no “flood of illegal immigrants” that is “swelling and swelling”. In fact illegal immigration has been declining for some time. You might want to check your facts before you rant.

  12. To all those who take issue with my comments I apologize. I am an uneducated man who only watches CNN and other liberal media sources. I have made my money in the private sector and have nothing to do with the public sector. I have done nothing to contribute to the community of Pleasanton but I am very critical of those who do. I now know I have been wrong and one sided in my views. I never speak of the city manager who truly controls all that transpires in this city..rather..it has been easier for me to voice my opposition towards the police and other heroes in our community. So to all those people I have offended..I have turned over a new leaf.
