A lesson in leadership

High school students shadow local government officials today

Six students joined Mayor Jennifer Hosterman, City Manager Nelson Fialho and Councilwoman Cindy McGovern in a board meeting Tuesday morning as a part of the annual Youth in Government Day.

More than 60 students from Amador Valley, Foothill, Horizon and Village high schools participated by shadowing employees of city hall, the police and fire departments, Pleasanton Unified School District and school board trustees.

In the city manager's board room, the students joined Pamela Ott, the city's economic development director, to discuss how teens view downtown. The students reported frequenting the area around Tully's plaza to gather with friends. They also said they mostly go downtown for food and events, such as street parties.
