Domus, a popular downtown gift and housewares store, will close next Thursday, July 31 after nearly 10 years of doing business on Main Street.
John Maloney and his wife Cathy, co-owners of the store, said they are closing their business to pursue other interests. Shoppers have noticed that shelf inventory at the store was shrinking, but as recently as late last month he couple denied rumors that they were planning to leave Pleasanton.
Telephone calls to the store tell shoppers to come early during the next eight days to buy merchandise that is advertised as "Clearance Specials." Gift cards must be redeemed by July 30.
When Domus opened at 652 Main St. in September 1998, it was part of the Domus retail store in Las Gatos. Later, the Maloneys bought the Pleasanton store and have operated it themselves ever since.
Domus has been one of a few retail stores that kept late evening hours in downtown Pleasanton and has been a popular after-dinner shopping spot.
Christine Salidivar, executive director of the Pleasanton Downtown Association, said inquiries already have been made by retailers who have been waiting for space to open on Main Street.
