It was only Thursday afternoon and already Candy Sheldon and others were claiming blanket space at Lions Wayside Park for the always-popular Tommy and the 4-Speeds band, which opens what is likely to be its last Friday night Concert in the Park performance starting at 7 p.m. tonight.
With advanced "reservations" like these, ground space could be gone by mid-day Friday in what promises to be perfect, finally-cool temperatures with 2,000-3,000 music fans by the time the concert starts.
Many will find more open spaces across the street at Delucchi Park, where there'll be more elbow room and still good sound from Tommy's excellent sound system as the band plays music from the 1950s and '60s.
The band, whose members are living in different locations, is expected to call it quits after tonight's show, although it has at least one more appearance scheduled in October at a special event to support the city's new Alviso Adobe Community Park on Foothill Road.
Tonight's concert is sponsored by Accusplit Activity Wellness, the Pleasanton Downtown Association and the Pleasanton Weekly. As always, the concerts are free of charge.
