Pleasanton police are investigating the death of 32-year-old Alex Gomes II, a Fresno resident who entered a Macy's store at Stoneridge Shopping Center and allegedly stole a hat at about 8:35 p.m. last Thursday.
According to police, Gomes was stopped by mall security after he allegedly attempted to steal a hat worth $25 from Macy's.
Gomes, who was described as weighing about 400 pounds, reportedly resisted the security staff and collapsed. As a result, some of the staff sustained minor injuries, police said.
Det. Larry Cox of the Pleasanton Police Department said at this point in the investigation, security officers used reasonable force and the death looks to be from an existing medical issue. He also added that Gomes was never official charged or taken into custody by police, but was considered to be arrested by mall security as he was detained and handcuffed.
Officers and the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department arrived on the scene at the same time and found him unconscious and receiving medical attention from mall staff. Paramedics administered cardio pulmonary resuscitation and the man was transferred to ValleyCare Medical Center, according to police. There, police said he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Cox said it was likely that Gomes was under the influence of alcohol at the time, but they are awaiting official toxicology reports from the coroner.
