Golf Course Committee wins mayor's special award Golf Course Committee wins mayor's special award (November 18, 2005)

Hosterman's dancing turns annual event into supper club 'spectacular'

Mayor Jennifer Hosterman, elegantly dressed in a shimmering gold evening gown, danced her way around tables filled with more than 300 guests at the Pleasanton Senior Center's main dining room last Monday in the mayor's annual salute to city, civic and community volunteers.

Then, before a hushed audience, she announced her pick for the 2005 Mayor's Award for meritorious community service: the city's Golf Course Committee. The group was formed 10 years with Karen Foss as its chair to help plan and develop the $34.5-million Callippe Preserve golf course and trails that opened last week.

It was only the second time in the 34-year history of the award that it has gone to a group instead of individuals. In 2003, then-Mayor Tom Pico gave the award to the Pleasanton Cultural Arts Council.

For those at the Monday night dinner, the event was as spectacular as the award recipients were a surprise. Usually an evening of programmed entertainment, Hosterman turned it into a supper club-type gala.

With a wireless microphone in one hand and holding dancing partner Mark Duncanson with the other, Hosterman swirled to the dance music of Spencer Chan and Guido Fazio, stopping at tables to thank city commissions and committees for their work.

Besides Foss, those who served on the Golf Course Committee, which is now disbanded, included Craige Harper, Jerry Pentin, Trish Maas, Ed McGovern, David Boyd, Jim Dibiase, Alan Zeunen, Mike Sedlak, Paul Ebright, Bob Silva and Jack Dove.

Duncanson, who was applauded for his fancy dance steps with Hosterman, is a youth specialist with the city's Parks and Community Affairs Department. -By Jeb Bing
